Dogs Mating

Question:
This is probably a weird question but how quick does it take for 2 dogs to mate? The reason I ask is a friend of mine, who was dogsitting for me, told me she wasn't sure if her dog had caught mine.. only for between 5-6 minutes. Would that be long enough for my dog to get pregnant?

Thanks

Answer:
yes it only takes once.

Answer:
ok thanks.. was just wondering cause the two dogs were only together 5/6 minutes.. she isn't sure whether they had actually mated for that long or not.. or even if they did.. i've got my fingers crossed they didn't though.. lol

Answer:
this really is not a laughing matter. I suggest you take your dog in to get spayed. That way it won't really matter one way or another if he did in fact succeed.

Answer:
I agree with BMDluver. I would definitely get her spayed. Growing up I never understood why our dogs were never allowed to have puppies, I just thought puppies were cute, why not? But now I realize that there are way too many puppies out there that don't have good homes so why make more? I am getting Sophie spayed as soon as she's old enough (about 5 months). If someone wants more dogs they should go and adopt one. I'm not saying you're trying to breed your dog, just saying that you should make sure that she doesn't get bred.

Answer:
No need to wonder or hope or cross your fingers. As everyone said, just get her spayed now. Better late than never.

So you left your dog, who was in heat,(WAS she in heat?) with a person who has an intact male dog?

Answer:
I agree 110% with the others. Please get her spayed ASAP.

Answer:
I agree-- why leave an unspayed female with an intact male? Even if she wasn't in heat, it's not like he would ever leave her alone... That is really no fun for the female-- really quite stressful.

Answer:
the two dogs have been brought up together and they get on great.. i dont leave her with them a lot now, that was the first time for about 5 months and their dog is usually tied up when she's there because it's only for an hour. I am going to get her spayed.. Can I still do that if I think there's a possibility she's pregnant?

My friend reckons she isn't now because they didn't actually mate, which is a relief.

Answer:
The best bet is to get her spayed as soon as possible. That way if she is pregnant, she won't be far along and the spay won't be as difficult.

Answer:
The vet will still spay an animal even if she is pregnant. But, the sooner you can get her in there the better.

Answer:
thanks for that... someone told me you couldn't get them done if there was a chance they were pregnant.. i'll try and sort something out asap.

Answer:
If she is pregnant you can still get her done. Might cost a little more but man is it worth it if you have all these puppies running around everywhere. LOL That would cost more money than just getting her fixed.

Answer:
I think there is also a "morning after" treatment now too. I could be wrong though.

Even if she wasn't in heat, it's not like he would ever leave her alone... That is really no fun for the female-- really quite stressful.
Not my girl, the boys learn not to approach her from behind REAL fast. Kinda funny watching all these he-man fully equipped dogs turn in to ears-back sucks when she puts them in their place.

Answer:
I know that treatment can be given after the fact to prevent the pregnancy from proceeding. My Eskimo is a boy who was neutered at 7 months - and he is always on a leash. However, people with unspayed females kept getting WAY to close - usually with Standard Poodles who are very attracted to my guy - and stating that their dogs were too tall for mine to reach so all would be fine. Sorry, but their dogs were bending over - and my short guy has very long legs. The pups wouldn't have been my problem until I found a basket of Eskie/Poodles on my doorstep. So I asked the vet "what if" - she has seen the interaction going on in her waiting room. It doesn't take very long for the dogs to do the deed.
