Chain...

Question:
I know how much everyone hates chains and having dogs outside...but...

Shyla runs away ok... and today she really wanted to be outside and I put her on a new chain... its longer and it doesnt tangle like the last one did. She can get to the fence but not jump over it so she won't get hung. And there's no way she can get hung outside. I just feel like a bad owner...
She just lays on the deck and catches rays or she'll go behind the chairs for shade... (and its under tree's so its really cool.)
She just doesn't want to be inside-- so what do I do?
I remember last time I mentioned the fact that I left her out sometimes I got jumped on... so anybody?

Answer:
And I forgot to say that I do check on her a lot... and I can just look over at the window and I see the dogs...

Answer:
Is she digging?barking?pacing?working herself into a state? when chained outside. If none of these apply then I say she's more than happy to be outside enjoying the day and if you have to chain her to keep her safe then do it. I just wouldn't leave her chained outside unattended, meaning go off to work or groceries...

Answer:
no no no!
She's content and happy... I just feel bad.
I mean she just lays there...
It seems like she's afraid to go on the grass- we have
a lot of space in the yard and she doesn't use it...
I dont know... I just feel like Im doing something wrong

Answer:
Our Collie Husky used to love to lay under the stairs in the gravel. She had 3 acres of mowed lawn to lie on under trees but nope, she'd pick the gravel. I think if she was not happy where she was then she'd move. It's not like she's on a short chain right? so she has a choice where to park herself for the day.

Answer:
Consider fencing?

Also if you exercise this dog enough it will be more relaxed in the house. Just a thought

Lol Luba, she has fencing, reread the first post.

Answer:
LOL want some of what I'm smoking???

Whoopsie sorry!

If your dog presently jumps the fence you can extend the height easily with lattice attached to it if thats what you need to keep pups in the backyard.

Answer:
as long as it is not in danger, and is cheked often i odnt have a huge problem with it, if you ahve tried to address her issues that is....

but my charlie girl is not on a chalin but spends the day lying around staring at the sky or wall, its her choice she is happy doing it...

when she was a pup or if we go to friends houses we tie her up, she has a good rope with a swivel clasp, and she is never left unattended (i watch from my beer chair ), it is mainly when we are at cattle farms, its to stop her hassleing cattle (not that she would but dogs get shot if their seen near cattle these days around here)....but she is never alone and does not mind at all....(she likes to be tied up near the bbq, for ease of access to the sausages)...

we had a red cattle dog once, she was my ex BIL pig dog, she was a lovely girl...well sam was always tied up, one night the idiot left her tied up...she wanted to get to the ants on the other side of the fence, she dug under the fence, got twisted and choked to death on the chain, to be found the next mornign by my 3yo nephew, food for thought......

but as long as you never leave her unattended and is excersised and played with often.... i know you feel bad, perhaps this can be an interim measure while you try and address her miriad (im sure) of issues.....work on ehr alot and you never know how she may go.....

good luck...

As long as you are not leaving her unattended, I'd say she is fine.

I have a fence personally... we've done work on it but she still manages to jump over it. Also our city has a limit in how high the fence can be...

and she does get a lot of exercise but she just doesn't like to be cooped up.

Answer:
Yea, I take care of her... and she can't go under the fence since theres concrete there and all other sides of the fence are not in reach of the chain.

Answer:
From what I know the majority of zoning requirements for fencing in many municipalities is 7 feet. You may wanna check it out, that may be your answer best of luck.

Answer:
Not sure what you have for a deck, but if it is an elevated one or one with enclosed sides (i.e. not a ground level patio) you could consider building a gate for it, then let your dog lounge on the deck; unless of course you think he may jump the sides of the deck.

Answer:
Shyla is an escape artist, she can get out of anything... and we don't have the right kinda deck for that anyways...

Answer:
With Shyla being a Husky ... they love to jump and run. I would use a chain if I had one as well. Unless you can create a corner of the yard, with fencing, with a cover where she cannot jump, i'd say chain is the best way to keep her safe in the ard.
