Cat chewing on cords

Question:
I have one cat that (sometimes, we've almost broke this habit) likes to chew on cords. I'm not sure why and I want to know if anyone else has this problem. We don't really have an issue with it anymore now that we use Bitter Apple Spray on all the cords in the house. Every now and again he's caught chewing on a phone cord or (we have six running computers in our house) mouse cords and even network cables. I'm surprised he's not dead from electricution - he has eaten right though many of them. Is this common or really weird?

Answer:
Last week I posted about my puppy chewing cords. She chewed right through a laptop power cord!! I was shocked that she was still alive. Here's what people had to say about products to help chewing:

I have no idea if it's normal, but it sure does scare the heck out of me.

Thank you so much!

It really is scary, I'm afraid one day he's gonna kill himself. Let's all hope not!

hi ladyredspider!

i have a 7 year old cat that has serious cord chewing issues as well- in addition to ribbon, plastic, string, or anything that can basically harm her in some way. let's just say she likes to live on the edge! i have friends who have cats with the same problem in regards to the cords/wires, so it's not as uncommon as i originally thought when my kitty started her chewing adventures. electrocution is our biggest fear! :(

if you can't keep the cords out of the way (which is impossible with most!) i would suggest trying what mollysmommy's link suggested- tabasco, bitter apple spray, citrus, etc. see what works for your kitty. if all else fails, tape up the cords/wires so that your cat can't hurt him/herself - doublesided tape or electrical tape has worked well for me.

i hope this helps. good luck to you!
