breakaway collars for cats
Question: Hi I had quite a scare the other night. I came home from work, was greeted by my cats. Everything seemed fine. I was sitting in my living room, I looked over at the front door and noticed something on the blinds. I found Fu's breakaway collar hooked on the blinds. All the blinds we have are the ones with 2 strings and not the ones with the loops to pull the blind up/down. His collar was hooked about 6 inches from the bottom of the blind. I am so thankful that I got him a breakaway collar. Or I would be mourning a beloved pet. I am getting Honey one today. She has the one that has the elastic that will expand about 2 inches. I am writing this as a warning to people that have cats and are not using the break away collars. I don't know how he managed to get caught up in the blinds but cats are very curious creatures. Answer: wow, thank goodness your kitty is okay! I do have a question though - how on earth did you get your cats to actually WEAR a collar?? I've tried the breakaway collars, and let's just say my cat would rather jump into a lake than wear anything around her neck. It was a horrendous experience - I put it on, and she managed to get it jammed up into her mouth (trying to get it off) and got it stuck behind her front teeth, flopped around on the floor (freaking out), and the stupid "breakaway" didn't BREAK AWAY! I had to literally cut it off her - while she was flailing about, scratching the hell outa me. I had the same experience with my little Sam ..... freaked me out totally ... actually caused some bleeding in his mouth. He recovered from the experience better than I did Pippin managed to get his mouth in behind the collar and it just broke away quite easily .... didn't stay on for more than 5 minutes I've given up on collars Answer: I had that trouble with both of them at first but they got over it. I started the both of them wearing the collars when the collar at the smallest it could go on them. about 5 months or when they were big enough for them. I always check the tightness every week or so, because Fu is still a growing boy. Honey is only about 4 - 5 pounds, so hers is usually as small as it will go. I will have the collar as tight as two of my fingers will fit comfortably(sp). Baby Kitty will not wear any collars. Answer: yeah, i just don't understand how other people get their cats to wear a collar - makes me nervous too, because my girls (2 cats) go outside. Thankfully they stay very close to the house, and if the wind blows too hard, they run back in, but if they were to stray they have no ID! my little Lulu had some bleeding in the mouth too - but most of the blood, (thankfully??) was from the many scratches I got while trying to get it off her ASAP. my arms looked like they'd been through a shredder. Answer: ive never put collars on my cats, they dont tolerate it well and i worry even with the breakaway ones. if they need to go outside they ahve little harnesses i put on them but they really prefer to be inside anyhow what a bunch of spoiled princesses they are heh Eleni Answer: My cat wears the supposed breakaway harness - I don't believe that it would actually work though. She has a better chance of slipping out of it then snapping it off. Maybe it's just because she's pretty tiny but she was never managed to snap it off - even when tangled up in the cedars. She broke her cat leash once by sprinting back and forth but never the harness. If she gets stuck she knows how to remove her body from the harness and then proceeds to run away from home - jail break ! Answer: Blaze wears a breakway collar because I also worry about him getting stuck on some thing. It wasnt that hard for him to get use to it...I think he likes it now...makes him feel like a prince! Answer: I have always had a problem trying to get a collar on my male cat. I got (not sure if "got" is the right word, as he just showed up on my doorstep one day) when he was about 1 year old and when I finally decided I just didn't have the heart to take him to SPCA, I went out and bought a collar...and then another....and another. Somewhere out there, there are about 3 or 4 perfectly good collars with his rabies tags on them. My other cat was raised from a kitten in a family and then brought to the SPCA when she was about 5 months. She's always been used to collars. I've never been scared with her getting caught on anything because her hair comes down over her collar (I call it her mane) and you can't even see the collar. Answer: I had the same problem with my 2 cats getting the collars stuck in their mouths. It was scary! The first time it happened with Fez I caught it right away and took her collar off. With Rocky I kept his on because he had never tried to take it off and couple of weeks later I came home from work and the collar was stuck in his mouth and he was covered in drool! I have no idea how long he was stuck like that but he was very upset and wouldn't leave my side for the next few days. He was lucky though because he didn't cut his mouth or anything. So my cats now do not wear collars but they don't go outside anyway. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
