Help - Puppy that almost died refusing to eat ....

Question:
Please help,

I bought a shih tzu on 6/2 who was born on 4/23. When I got her she ate fine. We got her home she started vomiting and quit eating. She only weighs 1.2 lbs and she got so sick I had to take her to the emergency vet. She had a catheter in her neck and she was being force fed all day on Sunday. On Monday I took her to my vet and they removed the catheter from her neck and were force feeding with a syringe and she was doing better. I went to pick her up and when I got her she would not wake up as she is Hypoglaucemic(man do I wish this had spell check). They gave her rebound 12 cc and she came out of it. She absoulutely refuses to eat for 3 days and then I fixed a meatloaf and she started crying and trying to get in my lap she just went crazy. I took 1/2 tsp of meatloaf and choped it very fine sprinkled over her canned food and she woofed it down. I have never seen her move that much. She came alive and went running arround the house. She now will just pick the meat loaf out of her food and not eat her food. We have tried 4 different foods with no luck. It is either force feed or meatloaf and I am running out of meatloaf. I know that peopl;e food is not good for them so what I am looking for is a recipe for a dog friendly meatloaf that she can eat every day. can you please help?

Pls take the time to read this thread, esp the second page:

I would suggest you buy some baby food, boil some potatos and mash them, boil some chicken and PUREE it with water in the blender.

Try just the baby food, let pup eat from your hand. If interested in the baby food add a little of the puree'd chicken in the next feeding. (feed every hour a small amount) then the next hour add a little mashed potato.

Where did you get this pup? Maybe its first few weeks were so horrible, it just shut down. I know a human baby who refused to eat at just 2 months old. She was basically trying to commit suicide after being born into a home of severe abuse.

Answer:
Your pup was less than 6 weeks old when you brought her home!! I HATE irresponsible breeders that let dogs suffer like this!!

Anywyas, I hope your baby does better, and bless your heart for trying everything you can to get her to eat.

As for raw food, you could try it and see if it hencourages her to eat. Best to find a specialty store as the big retailers don't sell it. We use Mountain Dog raw food, and it's pre-packaged so you don't have to guess what goes into a raw meal. You can check them out at www.mountaindogfood.com. You can also try a gravy type supplement in the food that makes it tastier. I can't think of the name of the one I'm talking about, but I'll post it when I do. I hope you can get her to eat normally again!

BTW, where did you get her from? A breeder, or a pet store?

Answer:
Rice , ground beef, cottage cheese ,yogurt try these they are light on her tummy and doggys love it. It is ok for now, to get her to start eating but you will have to find a proper diet for her. Or try some rice pablem done with water and baby food, I don't know if a dog would really starve itself to death.

Answer:
If she'll eat the meatloaf then that's a good thing. Just try making it a bit differently so it's dog friendlier like this:

ground beef - 1lb raw
partially cooked then finely chopped carrots
tin of peas or frozen peas(if frozen then cook for 5 minutes in microwave before adding)
cooked rice or potatoes(mashed) 2cups
2 raw eggs
1/4 tsp garlic powder

Mix all together, press into loaf pan and bake at 350F for 1 hour. Cool, cut into small bits and serve to her. This won't hurt her and has carbs, protein and vegetable. Add a dollop of yogourt to help her body with good bacteria. Very tiny dogs like you have often are difficult to get going eating.

We had a 1lb toy poodle come in at 6 weeks and he had a terrible time getting on to regular food at the beginning but slowly he accepted more of it and less of the extras.

I saw that too. It may be illegal in her state, I know it has become law in many that puppies can't be adopted out before 8 weeks of age (unless the mother has rejected them, or something like that.)

Answer:
THATS TOO YOUNG!
I don't know why a breeder would let such a young dog go...
anyways...
Try something like this, with similar ingredients...
Canned dog food, just warm it up a bit and she should want to eat it, the smell usually gets their attn.

Answer:
You know, at that age, she should have still been drinking mom's milk! Even if mom rejected them, the person responsible for the breeding should have had the common sence to hand feed them with a bottle until they were weened properly. Not only is the fact that this dog was so young when it first came home most likely the cause of it not eating, it's also going to have major behavioural and social issues as it gets older. She has to be socialized with anything and eveything possible as soon as it gets all it's shots.
