Can I feed them??
Question: Ok, as most know Marty and Minou had their S/N today. The vet today me on the phone last week not to feed them after 8pm last night (their appt was 8am this morn) When I picked them up I was told not to feed them till tomorrow night! I can give them water but have to take it away when i go to bed. That will be 2 whole days without food! They meow and come running every time I step foot near the kitchen . . .would it really hurt them if I feed them a little tonight! The vet told us last time we went the two of them were under weight, so I'm not keen on 'starving' them for 2 days . . . . thoughts?? experiences?? Thank you! Answer: We nener had to make our cats fast after getting them fixed. The same with the dog. We picked him up at 4:00pm and were told by just starting him with a bit of water but don't let him go overboard. By 8:00pm that night (surgery was at 9:00am) we were able to give him a bit of food and just keep an eye on him. They mainly say that incase they have an upset stomach after surgery. My vet said to just keep giving him a little bit every hour if he wanted it and if his stomach was handling it. If not, go back to water until the next morning. Spencer was fine after, just really tired. Answer: with my dog they told us to feed him small meals Eleni Answer: Gee, that is too long to wait. The standard rule all clinics I have worked for is small meals the first night and a water bowl as long as the can stand, walk & turn around without falling over. Normal feeding the next am. If the food comes up, wait until the next morning. They should have a water bowl as long as they are not wobbley on their feet. Answer: Well this is news to me. I was never told this when my cats where s/n. All I did was give a very small amount of the canned.I kept a close eye on them.Mine were both adopted at 8 weeks. So the s/n was done at that age.My SPCA will not let them go to new homes untill they are done. You can definatley give them something to eat and drink.BUT just a very small amount.Just keep an eye to make sure they are not puking. The reason they usually puke is because of the anastetic(sp)that is still in their system. Answer: Never heard this before? And we've had more than a dozen cats s/n in our family! This is probably the surgical preference of your vet. Don't want to say no and definitely feel where you're coming from. Then my kitties went in the night before and stayed the night after. Answer: Thats what I thought. Seemed far too long to me too. . . . . We gave them a small light meal last night, and a small light meal this morning. Colin is going home at lunch to check on them. . . . They were very thankful to Colin nice 'servent' when he feed them last night. He got a whole evening of purrrrrrrrrs and headbuts - while I the mean 'servent' who took them to the vet, got ignored !!!! Hahahaha! Poor me! Answer: Originally Posted by JDG while I the mean 'servent' who took them to the vet, got ignored !!!! They'll get over that, trust me I've never heard of waiting so long to feed a cat after surgery! Even when Alex (RIP) had thyroid surgery, we were able to feed her in small amounts the next day ... although she didn't actually eat much for a couple of days, we tried every few hours to get her to eat Poor thing hid under a bed for a couple of days .... talk about ignoring us but she eventually came around Answer: I ditto everyones answers, the first thing Vinnie did after coming home was eat No way should they stay without food for so long...unless the vet has another reason for saying that..but I don't know what..
