Automatic Litter Boxes

Question:
I have 3 new kittens and would love to get some input on automatic litter boxes.
I sometimes have to travel for a week at a time and think that it would be great to have an automatic litter box. I have yet to talk to anyone who really has one.
I am trying to find out if there is one brand better than another and with having (3) 11 week old kittens how often would I have to empty the resepticle.
Any input would be great!
Answer:
i have the littermaid and i LOVE it. three cats and one box, and it was always clean. with three cats i had to empty it once a day, but i recently modified the box by putting it up on a table and cutting a hole in the bottom of the poop recepticle. i put a tall garbage can underneath and now i just have to change the bag in the garbage can once a week or so.... luxury! i found that World's Best, or the litter that is made by littermaid works the best... other clumping litters seem to gum up the works too much.
but about the kittens... i have a young kitten (the fourth cat) who is still not able to use the automatic box, i had to buy one of the regular boxes and put it on the floor for him. i think it was because the automatic box is too clean. you know how they tell you to leave a poop in the box so kitty will remember where to go... well, there is no leaving anything in an automatic box.

Answer:
I too have the littermaid box.. I agree the brand of litter is VERY important. the cheaper no name brands do clump.. and make a nasty mess...
To avocado: thank you for letting me know why my kitten has such an obession of always having to pee in the clean box.. every single time the box cleans itself, she runs to do something in it... It is funny as heck!
thanks

Answer:
Thanks for the info.
I have been looking at the Petmate and Littermaid boxes.
Answer:
I have the LitterSweep and I don't like it. It doesn't clean the "stuff" very well - there are always clumps left. The box is in our bathroom and only works on electricity (no battaries ) so it is annoying to have all the cables on the floor. It is cheaper than the littermaid but just not worth it.
Answer:
I have the Littermaid, and I love it!. Be sure to buy the Mega size for three cats. The smaller one wouldn't be sufficient. Good luck.

Thanks gsc4, have to take a look. I'm still hesitating with this purchase, I read on epinions.com that the littermaid is cheaply made and breaks easily. I read later
Answer:
My first Littermaid lasted 5 years. I thought I got my money's worth from it.
