A question about Star and Lucky's coloring.
Question: Star and Lucky are both blue and white. Midnight, their mother, is all black with a few white strands thrown in here and there. All three are moggies. I was wondering, did Star and Lucky get their coloring from their father, or was Midnight carrying a gene for that coloring? Another thing I was wondering is that even though Star and Lucky are blue and white, Lucky's blue tends to have a brownish tint to it making him look grayish brown instead of true blue like Star. Would Lucky still be referred as blue and white though his fur doesn't look "blue"? Renée --Cats are grace and beauty in feline form. Answer: It's possible they could have gotten the "blue" gene from their mother or father. Consider my hamsters...I bred a black bear male (solid black) to a cream and white banded female. She had 3 babies, two were black and white banded (panda) and one was golden and white banded. (Golden being the "wild" color of a Syrian hamster.) Now, the female baby of theirs I kept is the phenotype panda, meaning she looks like a panda hamster, but she is the genotype carrying the other colors cream, golden and black. Since her father was solid colored she could also "throw" solids of any of the colors she carries the gene for. Her mother was banded (broad white stripe around the middle of the body) so her babies could also be any of those colors with white bands. Your kitten's parents (one or both) could either have been carrying all the genes responsible for their blue color, or just half of which combined in those kittens to give them that color. Confusing isn't it? I guess it's possible that they could've gotten the gene from their mother. She had two littermates: one was brown-striped tabby and the other one was blue and white like Star and Lucky. I have seen Tri-colored collies have all Sable and white Puppies! In fact, you have to look very close at his tail to see them. Lucky, on the other hand, doesn't have any kind of stripes-faint or not. Renée --Cats are grace and beauty in feline form.
