Spirulina: is it good for cats???

Question:
I just saw spirulina tablets in a pet shop.
Is it good for cats? If the answer is yes; why? And what nutrients are in it?
I bought them and my cats LOVE the tablets.

Answer:
In his book, Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats, holistic veterinarian Dr. Shawn Messonnier writes:
" Spirulina is a high-potency fresh-water, blue-green algae. Spirulina contains an antioxidant called superoxide dismutase (a scavenger of free radicals), B-complex vitamins, gamma-linoleic acid, calcium, iron, magnesium , potassium, boron, molybdenum, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, copper, amino acids, other phytonutrients with antioxidant effects, and mixed carotenoids.
In vitro studies show that the pigment in pirulina, phycocyanin, can inhibit cancer colony formation and may enhance the formation of neutrotransmitters."
(You can find this information on page 222 under Green Foods. He lists barley grass, spirulina, alfalfa, chlorella, chlorophyll.)

I thought I'd look in another great book too that has a lot of very good, reliable information, Herbs for Pets by Mary L. Wulff-Tilford. This is what I found:
Spirulina
Primary Medicinal Activities: Nutritive, helps with blood cleansing, tonic.
Common Uses: A complete and digestible source of vitamin B complex, beta-carotene, protein, and a wide variety of minerals. Spirulina serves as an excellent nutritional supplement for dogs, cats, and other animals.
Safety/Cautions/Contraindications: Spirulina is safe for daily use in animals, but its nutrient content is so concentrated that it can cause diarrhea and digestive upset if fed in excessive quantities. A daily dosage of 1/4 teaspoon per pound of food is generally acceptable for most animals. 1/8 teaspoon for cats.

Answer:
I did find them in a local pet store; I'm from Belgium, we don't have those stores here .
But I'm sure you can find them in Arizona. It seems to me it's easier to find such things in America. You also have a bigger variety in good pet food than we do.
I gave a tablet to one of my cats, he sniffed it, and ate it instantly . And he's the picky one. that's why I want to give him this as a supplement.
What's missing link?

Cusiostiy is the very basis of education. If you said curiosity killed the cat, id say the cat died nobly.

Actually, Missing Link is a supplement that you sprinkle over your cat's food:

Be aware that it contains several ingredients that are warned against in this article:

Ah, so that's missing link!
Well, it says the recommended dose is 1/2 tablet spirulina a day.
I'm going to give one tablet a week. No harm done then, I hope.

Spirulina is also found in many brands of fish food as well -- my girls are obcessed with my fish food - whenever I feed my tanks they are all up there next to me trying to get some too.
I blame my gf -- she let Milan sniff the food when she was feeding the fish once -- and milan started eating it. I've seen no adverse effects on the cats -- but I avoid feeding them fish food hehehe.

I use to take spirulina tablets because I was a vegetarian and didn't get the proper vitamins or minerals. It always gave me tons of energy... I just recently found out where it comes from and that it was a part of fish food...
