The importance of nail trimming......
Question: Well, it's been a month....OK, two months (maybe three ---- at least) since I trimmed all the wicked claws in this household. About a month ago, Chip and I were playing rough, as is our wont, and he 'got me good'. A couple puncture wounds on the back of my hand. He apologized, I dried the blood off, and nothing was thought any more about the incident. Until about a week later, when one little scab came off but the other one didn't. And, although the area didn't hurt much and there was no swelling or redness, anytime something passed across the scab, I was in excruciating pain! Or if the skin was pulled so as to move the scab from side to side. Pulling sleeves on and off hurt. Taking gloves off would bring tears. After about 3 weeks of suffering, I gathered my courage and went to the clinic. I told them that I was embarrased that anything so harmless looking could hurt so much. (And I wondered if they thought my problem was more in my mind than in my hand, lol.) You know medical people --- they gave me the big lecture about cat scratch fever and put me on some horse-pill-sized antibiotic. All the time I'm thinking, "It's not infected, but I'll take their drug anyway." Then tonight --- I take off my sweatshirt and it pulls the bandaid off and the scab comes loose (but not off). Accompanied by some fairly unpleasant language on my part. I go to flick the teeny scab off, and the pain is much worse and it's still stuck. What the heck? So I bite the proverbial bullet and yank that little sucker out. The PAIN was like someone poured scalding water in that hole! After some of the best obscenities I've ever come up with, I look at what I had pulled out and............it was a CLAW!!! Where was I? Oh, yeah, the importance of nail trimming...... Cats teach us tolerance........and how to see through walls. =(^.^)= Elsie Answer: Yikes! Cinderella is MONTHS overdue. She's drawn blood a couple times, my fault, I forget how fast she is! I'm being a wimp because now that I moved, the drive to the vet is much longer and I hate her crying. I guess I need to either bite the bullet, or pull a claw out of my hand.... Thanks for the heads up! “One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home.” - Pam Brown Answer: To tell you the truth, we haven't had Rookie's nails clipped since last June, when she was sedated to be shaved. She wouldn't let us get anywhere NEAR her to clip nails, believe me! So it's up to the professionals, and we haven't had a need to have her sedated for anything since then. It hasn't caused any problems thus far, although your story makes me think I should warn my boyfriend against the rough play they sometimes do! Answer: I hope its all getting better it can be quite painful sometimes. I do my ladies very regularly as i also show Pug Dogs and due to eye damage i keep them nice and trimmed up. The girls know when mummy comes with the nail clippers its time for an extra cuddle afterwards. Amanda - Anastasia & Tinkerbell. Answer: oh my gosh! No wonder it hurt so much! My crew gets their claws clipped at least once, if not twice a month. As soon as a nail becomes sharp, it gets clipped. and Cheddar too! Answer: How horrible! Yuck! I just made an appointment today for Mango to get his trimmed tomorrow. I try, but can only get two done if I am quick and that is only on the front. By the time I get to the others, the first ones are grown out! Answer: That's quite a story!! I trim my cats' nails "on condition" -- that is to say, when I notice they're getting long. And nails don't all grow at the same rate, I've noticed. So I'm trimming nails more or less continuously. I'm sure I'm applying clippers to a cat's nails at least twice a week. Maybe I have a low tolerance for scratches. Answer: Ouch! I usually clip every 2-3 weeks... Always remembering Onyx & Callie May Answer: Oh my gosh! That's horrible! I bet it hurt so much. I was sitting here trying to figure out what it was the whole time I was reading, and that never crossed my mind! LOL I trim my cats' claws once a week so they don't hurt each other accidentally. They grow like weeds! Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
