Probably because telling kids to respect snakes is like telling them to respect anything else...most of the time they dont listen.
People come from different cultures...different societies...like lizbud said this is not acceptable by our standards...but this isnt us. Do we have to think it is right? No....but try not to be so critical and try to understand that other societies are vastly different from our own....and that we are not in charge of them.
Hec...France thinks McDonalds is a travesty....but we sure do thrive off it here....other countries are also wildly offended by the inherent wasetfulness of alot of Americans...no culture is perfect, not theirs, not ours...and each society comes with its own annoying quirks.

Well, that kid had better not become too friendly with snakes.....might be the case where she gets older and just picks a wild one up thinking that it's no problem.
We just had a nine year old girl bitten in March here near where I live....she lingered on for two hours, then died. Yep.....ya don't mess with those things.
