My 15 yr old dog is having problems with reverse sneezing...
Question: Hi all, Pepper, my 15 yr old Border Collie/Blue Heeler cross has developed a really congested sounding bout of reverse sneezes. They come on 2-3 times a day. She'll do an outward sneeze, then go into one of her reverse sneezing bouts and they sound really snotty. I haven't noticed and mucus coming out of her nose at all, and she seems to be okay other than that, no breathing problems. This started about the 21st of December. We also have an 8 yr old Dachshund/Beagle?? cross, Cinder, but she doesn't seem to be affected by any of this. Is it possible that Pepper just has a cold? She still has a good appetite, and is drinking well. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great!!! Answer: Because she is a senior, I'd have her checked. At the very least, give your vet a call. Answer: It's interesting. I have a border collie/blue heeler cross and he too has the reverse sneezing thing. His isn't snotty though and he's always done it. I definetly think a vet visit is in order for your fellow though. Good luck! Answer: Reverse sneezing can be a symptom of bloat, I agree that a trip to the vet would be a good idea. Answer: Here's an update on my sweet little old lady Pepper. After finally getting her to the vet tonight (car wouldn't start last week-too cold!!!), it turns out she has a throat infection . She also has an absess on a lipoma on her tummy just in front of her right leg. They took a sample and saw the blood and pus, so the vet gave us some Clavamox to give to her for 14 days. Hopefully this will get rid of the throat infection and also start working at reducing the absess on her tummy. We may need to do a longer round of antibiotics for the absess to be completely healed, but don't know yet. So an hour and $350 later we were able to head home. That includes her meloxicam for her joints, a blood test, Clavamox, and a nail clipping and examination. Amazing how it all adds up isn't it? I'm just glad it's nothing really serious!
