Pacing Pomeranian

Question:
I have a 1 and 1/2 year-old male pomeranian. Recently, I noticed he won't keep still. He just keeps walking around and wining. We take him out several times to see if he needs to go, but he doesn't have a problem with using the bathroom. When we come back in, he just keeps pacing and won't sit down. Is this normal?

Answer:
Doesn't sound normal to me. If this behavior is something new, I think a vet check is a good idea.

Answer:
NO it's not normal have a vet consultation
and if you can video tape it and show the behaviour to the vet on the camera

Answer:
Thank you for replying. I took him to the vet, and it turns out that since he is in the breeding process with a femal Pom he's really stressed out according to the vet. They ran all kind of test, and he's ok.

Answer:
Breeding??? WHY?

Answer:
According to the vet, they're hormones are elevated and there's over excitement in some pets. I bought some vitamins that help calm animals, but they're big and I don't know how to give it to him whole, so I mix it in with his food. He's calmed down a bit, but still active. So, we have to wait it out.

Answer:
OK, you have had both parents x-rayed, and they are show quality? If not please don't go through with the breeding. :(

Answer:
Thats interesting to know.

Why is it that you are deciding to breed your dog?

You know that poms often end up in shelters, right.

Answer:
Exactly. Unless they're show quality parents that will give show star offspring, they shouldn't be bred.

Answer:
This is new information to me. I have never heard of Pom's ending up in shelters. I was looking for one in a shelter before I purchased mine, and they never had any. Is this a know fact, or are there any statistics to prove that most Poms end up in the shelter?

Answer:
Are you kidding me?

Why do you think Pomeranian rescues exist?

ANY breed ends up in a shelter...some more common then others.

I'm wondering what your reason for breeding is?

Answer:
First off Luba, I didn't post a reply to be belittled or patronized, but for aid with my dog. How many breeds have a rescue program? Too many. Does that mean that we should not breed them for whatever the reason? If you want to inform someone, then you need to find a better way. Poms are not the only one to end up in shelters. I've been to the shelter many times and I see a range of dogs, so to say that's a Pom's fate is wrong. Maybe if people were more educated about what it takes to raise a dog, then there would probably be less of a need for shelters and less of a need to euthanize animals. Manners my dear Luba! Manners!

Answer:
Has your dog been championed? Are you familiar with the genetic defects common in Poms? What are they? (I don't know) Has your champion dog been tested and cleared of them?

Please read the following, and be honest in your own evaluation.
Responsible breeder vs. Backyard breeder

Does that mean that we should not breed them for whatever the reason?
What are YOUR reasons for breeding your dog?

Just curious....I've never bred an animal, because I see the results of irresponsible breeding way too often, so I'm wondering?

Answer:
LR,

I lost track of how many time I have used that link on another sight....And I have to thank you for that...((((((( LR))))))))))........

I too would like to hear your answer PJ's Lady.

I have 2 male GSD's....Both come from 5 generations of Champions...All titled. All tested and cleared for all health and genetic problems....Could I have used them for stud? Only if I wanted to be irresponsible..My guys are not champions. And they were neutered.

Leave the breeding to the licenced responsible breeders who know what they are doing and have been doing it for many years. And they do it to better the breed.

And you did get answers to aid your dog...They said it was not normal and take him to the vet....Luba did not belittle you at all....She asked you a question...

And if you were a responsible breeder, you would have known what you vet had already told you.

No I am not coming down on you.I am only telling you the facts.

Answer:
You speak of properly educating owners...but wouldn't that include you as well!

Still no answer about why you decided to breed your dog, are you deciding to enter them in show lines?

So, I assume that you'll keep track of where all the pups go for the rest of their lives so that they do not end up in shelter or abused right...and you'll be sure to make sure they are all altered so they dont' reproduce....

Lets see, say there is a litter of 5 pups who breed atleast once with probably a mutt or mix thats another 25 pups....who potentially end up in shelter.

Get the point??

Answer:
I read this article written by a rescuer, and I really like it!

"Do you know the standard of the (Insert breed)? Does your dog meet this standard? If not, your dog is pet quality.

A pet is to be loved, cherished, trained, cared for, spoiled and
bragged about, but it is NEVER to be bred. No matter how cute or sweet the dog may be, if it is not up to the standard, you have no business breeding it.

If you have a purebred dog this does not give you the right to breed it.

Most purebred dogs are not breeding quality. If you breed your pet quality dog, you are a backyard breeder, whether you breed the dog in your backyard, garage, living room or an expensive hotel room, the term is still backyard
breeder.

If your pet quality dog has AKC papers, that's nice but it doesn't change anything. You still don't have the right to breed it.

If your pet quality dog cost you $500 be glad you had the money to afford it. You still have no right to breed it.

Do you think you can make your $500 back if you breed your pet dog or if your pet dog is a color or size that isn't in the standard but you just know everyone will want buy a pup if you breed her? Shame on you! Now you are a backyard
breeder with the purpose of breeding pups for bucks.

If the price for a tail dock or an ear crop seem high to you, what are you going to do when your beloved pet needs an emergency C section. Will you even be there with her to know if she is in trouble? Would you recognize trouble before it's too late?

And if you still want to breed your pet dog but need to ask who's supposed to cut off the tails and ears, ask yourself "What the Hell am I thinking!"

Do you think genetic testing is something they used in the OJ trial but has nothing to do with your dog breeding career? You are a backyard breeder.

Backyard breeders sell pups that aren't up to the standard of the breed.
They do this for many reasons. None are good enough reasons to contribute to the killing of dogs. Period.

Backyard breeders will swear all of their pups went to a good home. They believe this but it's not true. Some may have been lucky enough to go to a good home but more than half of them will end up dead, in a shelter, alone,
on a cold table with a needle sticking out of their leg. Some of those good homes will get tired of the dog and they will just give it away to anyone who is willing to take it.

Some of your beloved dog's children will end up
living alone in a backyard, barking all night, cold and neglected until the owner gets complaints and then that pups will be dead. Some will be starved
and beaten. Some will be bred until they die from it.

Backyard breeders are not responsible pet owners. They think they love the dogs but it's not really true because they don't really want to be bothered with doing all that it takes to breed ethically.

They love feeling important when they say "I breed "Pure Breed dogs"". But breeding pet dogs isn't something to be proud of. It's a shame on our society. It's the reason for the killing that goes on in shelters. Why do you want to be part of that?

The kind of homes you want for your pet pups don't want to buy from you. They are looking for responsible, respected breeders who are doing something for the breed as a whole.

Most of those who will come running to buy your pups are the kind of people I wouldn't give a dog I didn't like to.
They are the ones who will turn your puppy into a shelter when the novelty wears off. That's a fact.

Want to stop the problem of killing 1 Million dogs a month all over America?

Spay or neuter your pet dog now and tell everyone you know to do the same and leave the breeding to the people who are doing something to better the
breed."
Amen!

Answer:
I second the Amen.

VERY well said.
