Feline Parvovirus
Question: I recently adopted a kitten from a shelter and he ended up having feline parvovirus. I had to put him to sleep :( and my vet said if I wanted to adopt any other kittens, I would have to bleach my entire house. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if so what products are good to use for getting rid of this virus? I was especially concerned about the carpets, because I live in an apartment and I don't think bleach would be a good idea to use on them. I want to adopt a new kitten in a few months, and they said the virus can live for up to a year. I don't want another kitten to get sick, especially from my house. Do you know what the chances are of another kitten catching this from my house, and if the kitten had its first round of shots, will it help protect it from parvo in my house? PLEASE HELP!!! I do not know anyone who this has happened to, so if you have any information about this please share!!! Answer: I think a rescue would be the best help... I hope one comes on soon to answer that. I think I read here that it takes a minimum of 6 months for the virus to die. But if you adopt an older cat that is already vaccinated against parvo, it should be ok, no? Answer: I'm sorry to hear you lost your kitten I don't know too much about this virus but I did a search and thought this information looked like a good place to start. If you are not set on a kitten maybe an older kitty that has been vaccinated would be a good option for you http://www.penmarric.ns.ca/catcare/health/FPV.htm Answer: I'm not an expert on parvo either but I'm pretty sure the virus can live outside as well. I'm presuming because you live in an apartment that the kitten was strictly indoors? The only thing I've heard that kills it is bleach and that is obviously not an option for you. Like Prin said, wait until the rescue people on this site come on to give you a better answer. Good Luck. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
