Leg spasms and imbalance
Question: My dog, Cinnamon, is a mix of Terrier and Dauschund. Peculiar, but a great dog. She is coming up on 13 y/o. Just recently in the past couple of days, my wife heard the dog in the other room. She thought she was rolling around, but when she came into the room, she saw that Cinnamon was trying to stand, and it seemed like she couldn't get her legs underneath her. Her legs were shaking and "twitching" so to speak. Finally, she was able to get up, but was really shaky walking. Like she was drunk. This has never happened in the past. There is no other problems, she seems in really good spirits, playful, and still has a good appetite. Anyone ever experience this with their dog? I did notice about 3 months ago, that her hind leg would involuntarily twitch. Looked like a bull scraping at a matador, only it was with one leg. Wasn't when she was outside, she would just be standing there and suddenly her hind leg would just extend backwards. Happened occaisionally when she was just walking around. She did it for maybe a week, then that was it. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. Thanks in advance if anyone can shed any light on this. Answer: Haven't taken her to the vet? This could be a spinal problem, (disc) or any one of a hundred things that could go wrong in a 13 yr old dog. She needs to go to the vet. Answer: I agree she should go to the vet. I suggest to people if they can video tape the episode and show it to the doctor during the visit. I also agree with LR that it could be spinal problems, after all it's a dachshund mix right! Answer: I do plan on seeing the vet this coming week. She show's no pain, and no sign of any discomfort whatsoever. Just tonight, she was jumping and playing without the slightest bit of hesitation. She is an inside dog and when she does go out, it's only to do her business and that's it. I can't remember any time that she could have possibly injured herself.
