kennel cough

Question:
Hi:

We recently got a new addition to our family, a tiny french poodle tea cup, the poor thing has kennel cough, I already took her to the vet, he prescribed antibiotics, and I've b een giving her vitamin c. Yesterday, she was so much better, so I took her outside and she hasn't stop coughing since then. It makes me so depress seing her like that and I don't know what else I could do to help her feel better.

Answer:
aww the poor dear... when my dog had KC I was told to keep exercise to a minimum, as it can make the coughing worse. take your dog out on a leash so she won't run around too much. follow your vets prescription and advice, stay away from other dogs for a while (I was told 2 weeks), and hopefully she clears up soon.

Answer:
No new advice...we had the same vet advice for KC as jesse did (only all 6 of ours eventually came down with it...and subsequently recovered 100%). If her cough doesn't improve by tomorrow, you might want to call the vet and see if s/he thinks it warrants a prescription for a cough suppressant.

Meanwhile, welcome to the forum. I hope your new little addition recovers quickly

Answer:
I'll just point out that coughing is a very good thing... it means that things are breaking up... no cough, lethargy, lack of appetite spells big trouble. Make sure she drinks as much fluids as possible as the fluids also help to break down the mucus thus avoiding severe congestion and possible pneumonia as a result. It can take up to 6 weeks for the cough to be completely gone but with about 72 hours worth of antibiotics you should start to see an improvement in activity level etc..

Some vets recommend Childrens Benelyn (sp?) DM at night times only so that the dog can rest and get the sleep it needs to heal.. but with such a small creature, only take it on the advice of your own vet and in a dosage that the vet prescribes.

Answer:
Daisy came from the spca with kennel cough and gave it to Bailey. So I had both of them on antibiotics and gave them some honey to southe their throats. They loved it !
