mini daschund with horrible rash!!!

Question:
i have an 8 week old mini daschund/mix pup. when i first picked her up at 5 weeks old she was fine. she had a few scabs on her but they looked alright. i figured they were from fleas. but the other week i had babysat her sister, she had the same little scabs on her, but in a much larger quantity. now my puppy, Flower, has a horrible rash primarily on her head (but not ears). shes lost most of her hair on her head, it is very red, and she scratches so bad that she sometimes bleeds and i think some scabs are getting infected. it looks like she is getting little scabs on her back, and a couple on her tummy. but those dont look bad (yet). i do plan on taking her to the vet in a couple of days. i'm just wondering if anyone has a clue whats wrong with her. other than her appearance she is a very playful happy energetic puppy. (also, i know she doesnt have scabies, i've had a dog with that before, and the whole family got it too, and neither me nor my kids are itching, this time!!) any suggestions for an over the counter topical treatment would be great.

Answer:
rashes could be the result of many different bacteria and infections. so it would be hard to say exactly what it is. you should contact the breeder, and have the vet do a swab to check to see what you are dealing with
good luck

Answer:
ok, i'll make sure the vet does a swab, cause this poor puppy looks pitiful. as for the "breeder", i bought Flower for $5 from a family friend. the mamma is a mini long haired daschund, but theres no clue what the daddy is. but thanks for replying

Answer:
Could be food allergy too! I recommend a vet vist!

Good Luck! and welcome!

Answer:
I'm no expert but could these scabs be from LICE? Lice bites result in scabs, and dogs do lose their hair, that I do know from experience. russte

Answer:
Well I would put a big black X beside that friends name....

As for the scabs, etc... it could be that the pup has demodex mange, could be also a compromised immune system, could be allergies. Either way, you need to get it seen to immediately as all three can snowball into a much worse situation resulting in an almost bald dog with oozing lesions and big vet bills.

Give the little one a big hug, no pup deserves to be discarded like a pack of smokes.

Answer:
Please take your pup to vet as soon as possible. I am very experienced with Dachshunds - and as the other posters have pointed out it could be one (or more) of a variety of things. And, you also want to make certain the condition is not contagious. Please report back.

Answer:
well Flower has an appointment on Friday; i'll know more then. Lets hope for the best

Answer:
Great Hopefully it is something that can be fixed fast and easily

Answer:
My first thought was demodex.

Is it possible to post a pic.

Has your pup seen a vet before this for a checkup.

Answer:
well i took her to the vet today. she has demodectic mange. shes not old enough for the expensive dip, so they gave her an oral medicine. she has to take it once a week until she is 4 mos old, and i also have to put a LimePlus Dip on her once a week. it smells really bad. but once shes 4 mos, if it hasnt gone away yet, then they'll do the other dip treatment. they wouldn't give her any routine shots or deworming today.
