Sick Basset Hound

Question:
]I have a question about my friends basset hound whom just had a litter 5 and a half weeks ago and is now not eating. She has been taken to the vet and they did an x-ray and blood work and everything came back normal. Her temperature is normal. She was on an IV for three days at the vets. She is drinking but not eating. She absolutely refuses to eat even treats. She was brought home from the vets because he needed to be away for the weekend.(small country vet).Any ideas what might be causing this? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.[/b][/b]

Answer:
just so you know this is a pro spay neuter website so you may not get the best resonses, but the puppies are here now, so we can move on from that although i would encourage your friend have her dog spayed to avoid more litters.
sometimes mothers will stop eating for the first few days after giving birth. are all the puppies healthy does there appear to be anything wrong with one of them?
how are the puppies being fed right now? are they at the vet with the mother?
was an ultra sound dont there could be something wrong with the uterus?
was all of the placenta expelled after the births?

Answer:
Are you sure she is not just exhausted. At 5 1/2 weeks the pups should be eating and drinking and only nursing from mom once or twice a day. Has your friend begun to wean the pups yet.
Mom should have been eating a good puppy food since before the pups were born. I would suggest doing this if it has not been done and I would also suggest giving mom some home cooked for the next few days to get her energy up. Once on puppy formula she should remain on it until she gets back to pre pregnancy health. Having pups takes a toll on mom.
How old is she and is this her first litter. How many pups and how is their health?

Answer:
The pups are totally weened and were only getting little sips every now and then. My friend is a been a breede for many many years so that sort of thing is not the problem. The dog had been eating puppy food while nursing and has always had a huge appitite. It is just recently that she slowly started leaving more and more food in her bowl until she just stoped eating all together. Like i said, she has had an x-ray and it showed nothing out of the ordinary. Plus ahe had a complete blood panel done and it came back normal. This is very mind boggling. Thanx for responding.
