My cat Zorro has high fever every three days of unknown origin
Question: Since December 6 2006, my cat has extremely high fever (105,8-107) every three days. If he would be human I would say he has malaria. He has been to the vet and to two different hospitals of which one is the most important one in Holland. They tested his blood on everything that could be the cause, he had three echoscopies, 2 x-rays, a liver biopsy and a biopsy of the galbladder. He has been put on 4 different antibiotics, and was treated by the end of December for assumed pancreatitis (to which he did not respond). It is according to the hopsital very unlikely he has FIP. He has been put on prednison recently but the fever continues. Between the fevers he is completely normal, he plays and eats as any other cat. Is there anybody out there who has had a dog or cat in the same situation? Please let me know suggestions for we're running out of options. Thanks in advance. Answer: I have not had a cat with that many problems (seen many humans that ill but no kitties.) It does sound like FIP but I am not a vet so don't go by that as we say around here. You certainly are giving him lots of attention and the right care though!! he is lucky to have you - I hope he improves! Answer: ...I do what I can. Spoke to my vet just now (sunday evening 23.00 u! The man is an angel) and we decided to go for an endoscopy to rule out every possibility there is something wrong in his stomach or his intestines that didn't show up on the echo or x-ray. If that doesn't give any answers we decided there is this last option to treat him for FIP with this new medicine interferon (I think it's not on the market in the US yet?). I try it for two or three weeks at the most and then I really have to make a decision. Gosh.... “I don’t just want any cat – I want THIS cat.” Richard le Couteur, veterinary neurosurgeon Answer: So frustrating, if only they could talk (then again, some of them would never shut up)! Have they checked for obscure parasites? The cyclical aspect should be a clue, of what I don't know :(. Interferon is used here in Canada quite regularly, I hope your cat responds. Answer: Well, there is a diagnose at last. It took a long time and a change of doctors and laboratory to find what makes him ill. It's Mycoplasma haemofelis (formerly known as Hemobartonella felis). He's on doxycycline now for 2 1/2 weeks and everything was going well until last Thursday. Then he got another very high fever for 18 hours. After these long hours his temperature went down but he seems to remain very tired. Yesterday evening I saw he was going to get another fever again (he's on a maximum prednison level as well). I gave him Temgesic which stopped the fever at the start and it made him feel fine. I'm very worried now about what is going to happen next. Is there anybody who has or had a cat that overcame this disease? What happened and how long did it take before the cat got well again? Hope to hear from you. Lieke Answer: I've never heard of this disease, just wanted to say,you are a wonderful kitty-mom and i hope everything will turn out ok for your kitty Please keep us updated Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
