New kitten possibly ill
Question: I adopted a stray ktiten that is approximately 5 months old. He has been happy and playful and has received a checkup and all his shots. Today, he has slept all day and won't eat or drink when I show him food and water. I haven't had a kitten before so I'm not sure if this is a sign of a serious problem or if he is just having a "sleepy" day. Any advice would be appreciated. Answer: How long has it been since he hasn't had food or water? Are there any other symptoms? Kittens especially can become dehydrated quickly. I'd get to a vet just to be on the safe side. Answer: Lethargy and not eating or drinking are sure signs that something is amiss. I'd take her to the vet. Any litter box activity? Answer: Yeah I agree with the others, I would get it checked by a vet. Good luck Answer: I agree as well. A trip to the vet is a must. This way you know for sure. It's not a good idea to delay, either, as the earlier you know what's going on, the better! Answer: Welcome to here, your thread has been moved to a more appropriate location. Answer: I called a trusted cat-friendly friend last night and force-fed him water to hopefully prevent dehydration. I took him to the vet today and he was diagnosed with a serious kidney infection. He is now on antibiotics, nutritional supplements and pain meds. His energy is up and has eat a little. The symptoms were lethargy, lack of eating and drinking and not using the litter box. Thank you all for your support and the little guy appears to be on the mend. Answer: Glad to hear things have been figured out, and that he is on the mend. Answer: I have a 5 month old adopted kitten as well....and love him so much...so I am SO glad that your little guy is on the mend and will be okay.....peace Answer: That's good to hear he is doing better. Here is a little article about how to tell when there is dehydration (ignore the annoying anim.:P):http://www.kittenbaby.com/dehydration.php I just wanted to mention in general if it gets to that point it's best to get to a vet asap, that way they can recommend the suitable amount of water and how to avoid choking. Sometimes liquid can make it into the lungs and precipitate an infection, less likely with plain H20 but worth mentioning. I'm glad it worked out okay though. Kidney infection sounds really serious, best of luck with the recovery. Answer: Glad to hear the good news. It is always a good idea when you have questions such as this, to at least call your vet and see what they say. Often things can be avoided by getting the proper care right away.
