I have a question about my dog's weird behavior, anyone can answer?

Question:
My dog is 10 years old (shipoo) and in the last few months he has been licking everything from sofas, wood and tile floor, carpet and anything he feels like. It is really annoying and it can't be a healthy habit. I use vinegar and water on the floor and Pledge on the sofas and it beats me why he licks the carpet. I yell at him, I swat him, I say no, loudly, he stops for a second and then continues licking. Any suggestions?? I'd really appreciate it..

Answer:

umm don't swat.

you're best opening a new topic thread about this question

Answer:
My Shih tzu does that too....but I know it is from allergies. If harley has eaten anything he shouldn't....he will lick....EVERYTHING....until he is exhausted.

You might want to get him Vet checked to make sure...

Answer:
Yeah if he has a reason for doing this, then swatting him won't help at all. It will just stress him out, and maybe make him lick more.

I would bring him to the vet, to see what was going on. It may be allergies, or stress, only a vet will be able to determine.

Answer:
swatting the dog will not help. it will just make your dog fear you. your dog maybe trying to get something. is the water bowl always filled with fresh water? try switching it every 2 hours

Answer:
He could have a deficiency of some sort. The vet would be best to answer questions.

Answer:
My dog Nikki will do, and for her it is a result of anxiety inorder to try to calm herself, for example if she knows or thinks I am getting ready to go away the licking will start

Answer:
I would take him to the vet and have a blood test done, at the least. Sometimes licking strange things is a sign of mineral or vitamin deficiency. And I certainly wouldn't swat him!! This may be a medical thing not a behavior thing, that is beyond your dog's control.

Answer:
my dog does this ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the time as well...she is a 5 yr old pit mix and i have mentioned it to my numerous vets & her dermatologist...
sway is horribly environmentally allergic and i would think it would be an issue...
well, they never act like it is a big deal but it has to have some kind of bacterial effect...
some of the stuff my dog licks (blacktop, gravel) and eats (beach sand)...cannot be just chalked up as her just being silly, i wish my vets would maybe look into it a little more instead of brushing it off
