Dew Claw
Question: yesterday while doing the nails I seen Motzi had ripped a good part of the dew claw off and seems sore there? I haven't seen any blood (and you all know how paranoid I am with my dogs). I can see red or the inside of the nail? Its not leaking now. Should I clean it? I have liquid bandage, should I use it? Or leave it? Answer: YIKES I'm sure that hurts hmmmm Good question... I dunno what to do myself, if it's down to the quick and the quick is exposed maybe it should be cleansed but that would hurt..... hmmmm Good it's not bleeding but if its raw and open how to allow it to heal? I'm waitin for a reply on this one too myself! Answer: I don't think it can hurt to use the liquid bandage..I'd do it. I suspect it will heal on its own and of course you'll watch it for signs of infection. Answer: I have seen something like this posted on another site. What ended up happening is they had it removed. Not sure if this helps any. Answer: No Motzi's seems to close it's self. Which is good. But I'm totally bamboozled as to when it happened? She's back to running and doing her snow swimming lol! Answer: Well I'm glad hers closed up. Snow swimming....LOL Answer: How timely! Well, I've surfed this site since I got my poochie a few months ago, and found some really good advice. This is my first time posting here though. Took my 2 year old German/Belgium Shepherd (Bob) out to the park today. He had some really good runs with other dogs and chasing a kong. He moves like a leopard, and can outrun almost any dog. However, when I was putting his lead on I noticed blood on his rear foot. I think when he was putting on the brakes at one point, he ripped the nail out of his dew claw. It looks just like the other one, but without the claw (i.e. no apparent soft tissue damage). There was a reasonable amount of blood, but he didn't appear to be in any pain at all. When we got home, there was no blood coming out at all. I called the vet and they said the nail will grow back eventually, and said that I should keep him from licking it to reduce the chances of infection. I asked about hydrogen peroxide, but they said it would dry out the surrounding tissue too much and prevent healing. They mentioned something called Hibitol which is an antibacterial cleanser you dilute and apply as a liquid. I'd been told in the past that ripping off the dew claw is incredibly painful, but Bob didn't seem phased one bit. Is that strage or normal. I guess he didn't actually rip the claw off, just the nail itself? I've had him for 2 months and have never owned a guppie before him, so I'm just bouncing this info around for comment/advice.
