1 yr border collie/pit mix vomiting phlegm
Question: I've read vomiting is not unusual for dogs but our 1 yr old dog has been bringing up phlegm for the past few nights. He is NOT coughing at all. This happens between 2-7 am. It also has been several different times throughout some nights. He eats his last meal of the day between 6-7pm. He is not vomiting any food bits and he eats his morning meal just fine afterwards. The phlegm he brings up ranges in color from clear to reddish orange(suspect this color has some food residue) to light brown. Is this part of the normal vomiting for dogs? Answer: I would take him to your vet as soon as you can (or certainly call your vet if you can't go quickly). Vomiting is not normal behavior for anything. You should always contact your vet when your pet shows any signs out of the ordinary! Answer: I agree. I think your dog should see a vet asap. The different colour may not be due to food residue at all, but could be a sign of an infection. Please get it checked out and post back with an update. Answer: Normally, if a dog is vomiting bile during the night/early morning I would suggest trying a snack right before bed, as an empty stomach can cause this in some dogs. My own, for example, will absolutely bring up bile early in the morning if they don't get their snack at 11:30pm. That said, I would at the vet ASAP if my dogs were vomiting anything like the colours you're describing. Bile is usually yellow, brown/orange/ etc. would have me pretty worried honestly. Let us know what happens. Answer: Changing the food might help too. If there are too many digestive aids in the food, the food gets digested too quickly. I think that's what happens with Nutro (there just seem to be so many dogs who vomit bile on Nutro). The red part could be something he ate, or blood... Only a vet would know. Answer: If your pet is vomiting, bleeding, has diarrhea etc. seek vet care. Answer: And please keep us posted on the outcome of your Vet visit. for a speedy and accurate diagnoses and recovery. Answer: I agree with Pitgrrl and Prin. My dogs vomitted when they were on Nutro....mostly frothy bile. What are you feeding? Answer: Originally Posted by rainbow My dogs vomitted when they were on Nutro....mostly frothy bile. What are you feeding? Is this a common effect of Nutro? Our dog has been vomiting since we switched to Nutro a few months back. Before that I think it was Science, but he was allergic to that. He eats around 5-6 each night, but seems to vomit the next morning around noon. Three times in the past week. Maybe three other times in the past month. He's an 11y.o. Golden mix. Otherwise he seems in fine health. Answer: Yeah, a few people have had that problem on Nutro here. It's not the best food out there, so if you want suggestions for better foods, let us know. Answer: Thanks for the reply. Any suggestions on food would be appreciated. We prefer putting him on something a little better quality or more natural, versus the current Nutro chicken, oatmeal and rice formula. I think we had him on Hill j/d but he kept licking (we thought it might be an allergic reaction) so we switched to Nutro. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
