Rottweiler puppy has runny stools.

Question:
Hello all.

Last week I got a Rottweiler puppy to keep my 3 month old Husky company, (eventually when he catdhes up in growth )

According to the breeder he was already on Beneful puppy chow mixed with water. Everything was fine all last week.
This friday my son let him eat a little fast food chicken.
Well he's been runny ever since.

I immediately put him on his puppy chow again, and he's eating well, but with really soft runny stools.

The vet won't be in till Tuesday. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Lili.

Answer:
Beneful isn't a good food at all, imo. I would suggest you look in the food forum here for some better foods for your puppy.

Also, I would advise keeping the puppy away from fast food chicken.

If you switch him to a different food, please do so gradually.

In the meantime, I would get your puppy in to see a vet asap. Your puppy is very very young and can become dehydrated quickly.

I agree and please read this thread:

Answer:
take a look at this website just so you have an idea of what you've been feeding your puppy www.dogfoodanalysis.com . Puppy are very sensitive to food change also it should be done over a 2 week period so make sure to rotate the food slowly when you get him a premium kibble. avoid junk food and make sure to have a vet take a look at your puppy asap. Diarrea shouldn't last more then 2...3 days max if your vet is not available go to another one. Also, make sure to tell your vet that the pup ate cooked chicken...if it accidentaly swallowed a piece of bone it could be very dangerous.

Thank you for all the help, the food forum really opened up my eyes!

Well today the vet diagnosed him with 2 kinds of parasites. Gave him Metronidazole tablet 7 day treatment for one, and 1 dose of 'Strongid 'right then and there for the other, as well as a tube of food supplement. And an appointment for Tuesday, he already looks better.

I was really surprised at the info in the food forum, I checked out the bag and sure enough it's mostly corn meal.

A woman in the waiting room mentioned that she used Eukanuba for her Rottie, but when I asked the vet he said Beneful was "just fine". LOL, I'm going to change them both anyway. Thanks again.

We as owners need to ask the right questions and read all the labels - my number one rule I ask is "Would I want to eat that? Or do I know what ingredient that is?" - recognizing that my dog has a different diet.

Hopefully things get better!

Thanks for the update
I want to add though that Eukanuba isn't a good food either....take a look around the food forum, there are a lot of good suggestions there

Answer:
I agree. Eukanuba is overpriced garbage. Don't buy any brands that you get at the supermarket or places like Walmart. You need to go to a pet/feed store and get a premium brand such as Canidae, Innova, Natural Balance, Go Natural, etc. There's lots more....as mentioned before, check out the food forum here.
