My puppy just ate his own poo!!
Question: So sorry to post again. But I have to ask this... We usually pick up Finn's poo right after he goes, but sometimes he goes while he is on his leash and we are not there to see him, then it snows and we don't see it (we have a yery large back yard). Well, I just went out to bring him in and he was eating something. I thought "he's eating snow", until I got closer. He found some frozen poo and ATE IT!!! I have heard of dogs doing this, any idea why? Also, will it hurt him? This is just yucky! Nikki Answer: This is very common....Cassie used to do it a lot Then over the summer we thought she stopped doing it, but we caught her doing it once so far this winter...we never let her get a chance to do it again I think some dogs prefer the icey winter poops...aka poopsicles. There is stuff you can get at the vet called Forbid, but it didn't work for Cassie, I'm not sure if anyone else has any advice But like I said it i not uncommon Answer: Oh, yeah, the dreaded poopsicles! he he he We've always had at least one dog that just relished poopsicles. It's never seemed to hurt them. It bothers us a whole lot more than it bothers the dogs(obviously, they have no problem with it!) and I learned very quickly that in some situations the command "drop it" is just more...pleasurable... than "give". Some people have good luck with the Forbid that HO mentioned--we have some in the cupboard but we keep forgetting to try it on our current poop-eater. (She prefers hers warm...straight out of the dog, so to speak...she'll actually twirl while she's pooping, trying to get to it before we do.) Some people have also had luck just changing to a better food. But that's never worked for us--we feed Innova now and the change made no difference. We even tried meat tenderizer over the food--it's supposed to make the poop taste bad... It worked with our springer, but not our other poop gourmets who seemed to relish it as fine seasoning...and I was never sure if I really wanted to subject the dogs to all the stuff in the tenderizer We try to keep the yard as clean as we can--and with a little effort, even with 6 dogs running around, we can keep the yard remarkably clean, cutting down on the poopsicle incidents we have to gag through... Answer: Eating their own doesn't pose a health risk however eating others may. Answer: i hate it to grrrrrr have tried everthing i have 2 that do it now the 5 month old the middle one is the worst, we are getting a muzzle as i keep our yard very clean i have tried everthing no luck any other ideas would be great brenda and the 5 min pins. Answer: Thanks guys. I will have to make sure that the yard is poop free from now on. I needed that laugh. My best fried just called me to tell me that she had to put her dog down this afternoon. She was a 10 year old mixed dog, very small. She was apparently in Kidney failure. She started throwing up last night, and couldn't walk right this morning. They took her to the vet right away and found out that it was kf. She was pretty advanced, so there was not much they could do. So, she is devestated to say the least. Her 2 yr old son keeps telling her to "stop crying Mommy", and she's 5 mths pregnant. I told her (through my own veil of tears) that Molly was a good dog who had a wonderful life, and that she should treasure that. So Sad..... ANyway, thanks for the info on the poopsicles! I don't geuss they are a delicacy that I could market and sell, huh? Nikki Answer: So sorry to hear about your friend's dog... Glad we could give you a giggle--wish we could cheer up your friend... Answer: So Sorry to hear about your friends dog Answer: Sorry about your friends dog. Maybe this could help with the poopsicles problem: Answer: Sorry to hear about your friends dog. You get very attached to your pets and is hard when the time comes....Our two shih zus are both pooh eaters,,one is not to bad now but the one we just got a couple of weeks ago is terrible. She likes it fresh too,,as soon as she goes, she turns around and eats it. I have to be standing right beside her when she goes or it is too late. Kind of funny though, she will come in and want to lick your face,,wife calls them "sh--kisses". Dobb Answer: Thanks for your replys. I really just have to watch the poo in the yard and make sure it's picked up. Luckily he only likes it when it's been there a while and is good and frozen! He likes to play with it for a while first. It's like a new toy! Thanks for your support for my friend. Both of us have been crying like crazy. Like she said, Molly was her first baby. Although since she had Molly, she has had 1 child, with another on the way, Molly was her first. She had her before her family (even before her husband). It is so sad, but she is trying to focus on the good times. She'll be ok with time. I just look at Finn and think about the time when I may have to do that, and I start to cry. I can't imagine that yet. Thanks again everyone. Take care. Nikki Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
