Question:
Hi. Wondering if anyone can help me to understand the cat world. My cat just recently yesterday got spayed and she has a baby that we kept........when my mother cat was at the doctor the baby knew she was gone and when I brought her back, now there hissing and growling at eachother. Ive heard this is normally but I was just wondering why this is? Is it from her smell being gone? Does the baby cat Not recognize the mother cat as her mom anymore? will she ever and vice versa if i get my baby cat spayed soon?

In my experience as a cat owner (not a vet)when the kittens have grown (not taking mom's milk anymore) they tend to go they're seperate ways just like in the wild, I have a mom(T.C) and son(Tiger) they are 17 years and 14 years old. When tiger was a kitten mom took great care of him washed and fed him bonded etc.... but when tiger was old enough to do this for himselfthey're bond lessened. They would do the same as your cats hiss and growl. T.C did the most of it while Tiger just seemed confused at the reaction. They have tolerated each other for all these years (never an all out cat fight just play )so I think it is quite natural, who knows maybe it was her way of teaching her Tiger to be always wary of other cats and alert.

Not to mention mom has been through an ordeal and is probably a little edgy, sore and misserable I know my T.C. was, but then she's just like that anyway

A cat who goes to the vet comes home smelling differently, and is often seen as an intruder by the residents cat(s). They recognize each other primarily by smell, since their vision isn't all that great!

The best thing to do when bringing a cat home is to take a towel and alternate rubbing them with it, to intermingle their smells.

Do this when you take the kitten in to be spayed, too.

They will usually be fine once they know who everyone is again!
