How to deal with your daughter when your dog needed to put to sleep?

Question:
I have a 12 years old German Sheppred and he is having a lot of health problem lately and we have to put him to sleep. My daughter dosen't want our dog to put to sleep because she is so attached to the dog. I did explained to her that it is better this way for our dog and we don't want him to suffer any more. What should I do and how am I going to deal with this situation????:(

Answer:
This is a very tough situation.

How old is your daughter? Has she ever had to deal with the topic of death before?

It is usually best to be honest about these types of things. The degree of information will depend on her age and maturity level. If your dog is suffering, she needs to understand that you will put your dog to sleep out of love for the animal and so that s/he will no longer suffer. If your child is young, then she needs to be explained the difference between animals and humans (i.e., if I am sick, will I be put down?).

Give your daughter a chance to say good bye and to spend some special time with your dog. Children often want to get another pet (a puupy perhaps?), but a waiting period would be appropriate.

good luck,

Dave
