Our cat died, why?

Question:
Yesterday at 2pm our shorthair yelped, like he was stuck in a closet. My wife was home alone and went to find him. He wasn't stuck. She said it looked like his claw was stuck in the carpet and she went to unhook him ( he was perhaps heaving - making him look stuck) and he hissed at her - only once. He then vomited bloody/food. She immediately called the emergency clinic and they said come in now and she did. It takes 30 minutes to get there. He died in the car on the way. In less than 30 minutes he was gone. Last night I cleaned the litter box and there was a small bloody diarrhea. We have (had) two cats. He was gone so quick. The vet checked him and could find nothing obviously wrong. He said an autopsy would be the only way to know for sure. He's an indoor cat. Not hit by a car - vet thought he had been hit to have bloody vomit. He may have eaten something. We don't know. He was 10 years old.
I'm simply curious what happened - it happened so quick. I'm thinking poisoning, but we have no rat/mouse poison and all cleaning stuffs are put away. There were a few crayons in the floor, but none appeared chewed on.

Anybody ever experience this? We have another cat and were afraid for him. The vet didn't think this was anything contagious.

Thanks for listening.

Answer:
I have no help either but im very sorry for your loss. hopefully the vet can tell you what happened and your other kitty is fine.

Answer:
msm,I am really sorry about your cat
I have no idea what could have caused this, hopefully the vet will be able to tell you.
I have a 9,10 and a 5yr old cat and can imagine you are heartbroken,so sorry
Please post again,I would really like to know, why a cat would die so suddenly..

Answer:
I'm so sorry! That is sad and strange. Unfortunately I have no ideas.. if you are worried about your other cat, maybe an autopsy is worth it. However, it won't necessarily give you the answer either.

Answer:
Cats are famous for hiding their ailments, only showing distress at the very end, so it's possible this had been developing quietly for months or weeks. You would have had no way of knowing, unless there were noticeable changes in his behaviour or eating habits.
I'm sorry it had to happen this way. RIP kitty, no more pain.

Answer:
It sounds like he had internal bleeding which could be caused by cancer or a ruptured spleen or something. But, as Badger said, cats hide their ailments very well and it's often hard to tell there's something wrong until it's too late. I am so sorry for your loss.

Answer:
Thanks folks.

We decided against the autopsy. Harry was my daughters cat and we just let her say goodbye and mourn the loss. She's 9 and Harry was 10. He slept with her every night.

Thanks for the support.
