Uncomfortable Dog
Question: My beagle ate a ham bone last night and had a bowl movement at 4 pm this afternoon. She is now unable to poop and is trying very hard with bleading and shivering. I gave her a fleet enema. What else can I do? Answer: Was this a cooked bone? Canned pumpkin (not pie filler) can be used for constipstion. but this sounds worse then that. How big of a bone are we talking here? Answer: It was cooked and a little smaller than my fist. I didn't think she could eat it but only chew on it. Before I knew it, she had eaten the whole thing. She is trying hard to get rid of it but nothing is coming out except slime etc. Answer: Why would you give her an enema? Did the vet advise it? Stop playing doctor and get your dog to the vet immediately. Answer: Never never never never give a dog a cooked bone. You could try some canned pumpkin (not pie filler) and see if that helps. I would possibly see your vet though if her condition changes. How is she other wise? playfull? Still drinking water? Answer: if she swallowed the bone whole, it might cause a blockage - do not take any chances and rush your baby to the vet! Answer: If she is bleeding from the rectum and shivering that is very bad signs , a fragment of bone may have pierced her intestines get her to the vet right away Answer: Originally Posted by sammiedog It was cooked and a little smaller than my fist. I don't mean to scare you, but I'm guessing that you're very likely looking at surgery here. There are three problems. The bone was cooked (never give cooked bones), and it was almost the size of your fist. And if the dog chewed up any shards of the bone, it's not unlike swallowing a handful of needles. I'm guessing your dog has a blockage, and stool softener will for sure make it worse. Phone an emergency vet, and get your dog in NOW. If you think the bone will pass, then feed an additional meal so it "bungs up" and is "pushed out"... however, a bone that size is likely not going anywhere so feeding another meal is likely to come right back up... a for sure sign of blockage. If food can't pass, it will come up. What breed of dog are we talking about here? (edit: Sorry... I just re-read the original post. PLEASE get this dog to a vet immediately.) :( Answer: The vet told me to give the enema. Sounds like I better get her to a vet. I would have taken her to my vet except we are in the middle of a blizzard and she said I couldn't get to her office as the roads are too bad. Thanks for eveyone's help. Answer: I hope she is okay =( Answer: Originally Posted by sammiedog The vet told me to give the enema. Did she give a reason why? Usually with chicken bones, the idea is to get the food to stick to the bone fragments, and hold it together to help force it out (and hopefully protect the sharp edges). If the bone is whole and stuck, liquid would just move around it. I don't mean to go against the vet who told you this, but I am curious as to the reason why an enema (maybe someone else can answer?). Either way, please get your dog to a vet and take care of your baby. :( Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
