I have a tabby cat who is a little over 10 years old. Gradually over time he has developed a hack kind of like a cat will do when trying to hack up a hairball or worse. 3 or so weeks back he began wheezing and the hacking got worse and more often. I took him to the vet and was told there was a possibility he might have asthma. The vet gave him 2 shots, 1 Baytril 22.7 inj 2mg 2.0 cc and dexamethasone inj. 2mg 2.0cc and sent him home with baytril and prednisone tablets, 1 baytril a day every day for 7 days and 1 prednisone every day for a week and then every other day thereafter. My cat was doing great as long as he was on the baytril. Seemed fine, wheezing, coughing, and hacking all disappeared, but when the baytril ran out, about 2 days later the symptoms came back and began getting worse. The prednisone alone didn't seem to be doing anything for him.

The vet seemed to think he might have had an infection and just needed more time on the baytril so we began giving him the baytril again and continued the prednisone every other day. almost immediatly the cat began getting better and was fine until he ran out of the baytril again 10 days later. about a day and half after being off the baytril and the symptoms came back. Anyone have any ideas? I am about to go back to the vet again and see what she suggests. Could this be a really bad allergy? My wife smokes and the vet said it could possibly be asthma with the smoking making it worse. if that was so, would the symptoms go away by taking baytril? You couldn't tell him from any other healthy cat when he is on the baytril.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. I am really worried about my cat as he's like a son to me.

a couple of other things I just thought of. When my cat was first sick, he was sneezing and some fluid was coming out of his nose. looked kind of gooky. that is no longer happening. also, on the first vet visit, the vet did blood work (CBC w/diff) and said everything looked good there.
