i need advice!
Question: I had written in ealier about my dog, Bailey, a chow/shepard mix, being diagnosed with Pancreatitis. She was taken to the emergency vet because she was shaking terribly like she was having a seizure. She didn't have vomiting, diarhea, or lack of appetite, nothing. She acted fine except she was shaking. We thought she might have gotten poisoned. Well, the vet took bloodwork and found that her lipates were high, so she was hospitalized for one night on an IV and I was told she had pancreatitis. I took her home the next afternoon, her lipates were around 2200 then (normal range 200-1800)... the next week after keeping her on a bland diet of Hill's Prescription i/d...i went to check her levels at the vet. They were at 2300. I then went to the vet a week later, my regular vet, and he seemed skeptical that it was pancreatitis at all...and said she seemed fine and to gradually incorporate her regular dog food. He didn't think we should even do bloodwork. Bailey is now having diarhea, and I'm worried. What does everyone think? Is it possible her levels are naturally just that high? and that the diarhea is just from switching foods? I am really stressed because there has been no definitive diagnosis. I am watching her every move. It has been about 3 weeks since the emergency visit and she was deemed okay to go home after one night, isn't that not typical of pancreatitis? i'm not sure Thanks for any input ~caroline Answer: Your vet should redo the blood work to be sure! I know how upsetting this is...what is the food you are giving again? Boiled chicken and potato, slowly with other veggies added over time is probably one of the best diets for this type of condition. You are wise to be skeptical as to whether it is/isn't pancreatitis! If the levels stay high your vet should be looking elsewhere! Diarrhea may be from food change BUT it could also signify allergy to the food as well. Try the boiled chicken with boiled potato or rice! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
