HELP! Bad frogs????

Question:
Harley got her mouth around a frog when I took her out just now, and immediately spit it out and began sneezing and foaming a little in her mouth. How worried should I be???

Answer:
Frog or toad?

Answer:
Can't be sure...it's pretty dark outside. But I've seen plenty of them around in the evening, mostly on the smallish side. There about half the size of my closed fist, with darkish markings. I'm pretty sure she didn't eat it, I saw one right where she started acting funky.

Answer:
And she's acting completely fine now. Her mouth foamed for a minute or two, and now she seems to have shaken it off. She wouldn't drink water out of her bowl, so I "convinced" her to drink some with a spout water bottle. Most of it ended up on the floor, but I was trying to wash her mouth out anyway.

Answer:
If there are a lot of the same type around, try to get a picture of it and look it up. Some of them can be quite poisonous. Hope she's ok.

Answer:
Oh- that's true you're in Florida.. eek.. Definitely try to find out if it's poisonous.

Answer:
Very hard to try and track down a frog at night and take a picture. I'm trying, but honestly they all look so much alike anyway. Guess I'll be sitting up for awhile watching her like a hawk.

Keep your fingers crossed.....

Answer:
frogs/toads secrete a substance that causes animals (predators) to foam at the mouth, to drop them. it happens to my cats all the time. nothing to be alarmed about. it's a defense mechanism. my youngest cat catches them, brings them in the house, prompty drops them, makes funny foamy faces, gives the toad a dirty look, and runs off in disgust. I then have to catch the little bugger and toss him back outside.

Answer:
Let's hope that's all it is. The pessimist in me immediately found out that marine toads (a non-native species) have populated in Florida, and hang around bodies of water (I live off a pond). So far, she's acting fine.

I'll be up all night anyway looking after her.....

Answer:
Simon has a horrible penchant for tracking and catching frogs and toads, most recently I felt him tug at the leash, looked down and there were 4 flailing amphibian legs sticking out of his mouth. Thank goodness he finally learned "drop" about 2 months ago (we'd been working on it for almost 3 years). Frogger lived to hop another night and Simon had no ill effects, but like you SunGurl, I spent the evening monitoring him every 5 minutes.

Answer:
Harley was fine. I sat up to just after midnight with her to be sure. She seems completely unscathed after her amphibian encounter. As for me, well I probably have a few more grays hairs today!

For sure, I'll be watching her much more closely on our evening walks!
