Dog will not eat or drink voluntarily after loosing mate
Question: Toffee is a 10 month old Golden Labrador Collie Cross and has been very energetic. This weekend our other dog died and since then poor Toffee looks sick and does not want to do anything or eat. If we put food to her mouth she will very slowly eat it. if we put water to her mouth in a bottle she will drink it but does not voluntarily eat or want to leave her bed. Her head seams slightly warm and her body cooler than normal. Her heart and lungs seam to be running faster than normal. Is this just mourning or has she somehow got an illness at the same time as her mate died(was very sadly killed). Help please if anyone has ideas - if not we will be taking her to the vets tomorrow. Answer: I'm sorry for your loss. But what was the reason your dog passed away? Was it a sickness? If so what was it? It's hard to say since we don't know how your dog passed away. Need more info please. Answer: Yes what did the other dog die from? Does do mour and it could be that but it could also be a number of other things. Do not force the dog to eat until you see the vet tomorrow. If things worsen go to 24hr emergency vet hospital Sorry for your loss Answer: Sadly our male dog was killed on Saturday night - he escaped and he was shot by a local farmer for chasing sheep. So we already have a sad family. On Sunday one of our Sons went looking for him with Toffee while I went looking elsewhere. Toffee found some dry blood on the ground and started crying. Answer: Oh no,not another "farmer shoots dog!"and in the UK,what's the matter with people and guns? Sorry for your loss:( If there is nothing medically wrong with your dog right now, there probably will be if she's not eating, lot's of love and care and the Vet is probably a good idea. Answer: I'm so sorry for your loss. Grief is a powerful emotion for anyone. I went threw similar thing with my oldest dog when our cat died. I ended up having to get a kitten so she could pamper it. Answer: I am so very sorry.:( It could very be possible that your Toffee is greiving.Animals do greive.Toffee needs lots of love and affection now. I hope all goes well at the vets. Please keep us posted. chico,I know. It's terrible. But unfortunately farmers are protecting their livestock...I know it's not right. But this happens everywhere. We used to have to shoot the groundhogs on my aunts farm. Now remember guys, this was MANY MANY years ago.My aunt lost 2 beautiful Quarter Horses and many Heiffers to the holes in the ground made by these groundhogs. They broke their legs and had to be shot. Answer: Yes, dogs certainly can grieve, but I think a vet visit is still in order if your dog doesn't start to eat shortly. It could be a medical problem that is happening just coincidentally. So sorry about your other dog, but as Mona said, farmers do have the right to shoot loose dogs to protect their animals.:( Answer: Keep this one close to you Sorry for your loss Answer: Hello everyone, thanks for your help. Toffee is improving, responding to our TLC and medication from the vet. We went to the vet and Toffee has a temperature of 105F, so they took a blood sample and gave her 2 injections: an Anti-inflamatory and An Antibiotic. Since then Toffee has gradually but significantly improved - more life and feeding & drinking ok. We have to return tomorrow to the vet for a further checkup and if she is better then just continue with a course of antibiotic-if worse a scan and possible operation. Blood test results now received- show slightly high White blood cell count but not significant, also slight Annemia. Hopefully, tomorrow Toffee's temperature will be lower and she will be feeling a bit better. Answer: I am sorry, but I don't think it's right...why not be neighborly and catch the dogs and call the owners.Oh well, maybe I am naive, but if anyone shot my dog or cat,I would become homicidal Mona the ground-hogs or prarie-dogs I can understand, although I think they are both cute and funny to watch, but it's even sadder to have to kill a horse.
