Reaction to Panacur
Question: I have a 4 week old Chihuahua puppy that seems to be having an adverse reaction to being wormed with Panacur. The vet suspected hypoglycemia but giving nutra-cal, kero has not changed the problem. She is bobbing her head side to side. This is now going on for 2 days. It started on day 2 of being given Panacur. I bought her mother who I did not know was pregnant at the time. The siblings are all fine with no head bobbing. She is eating and playing fine. She is nursing in addition to eating Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy Food after being softened with water and canned puppy food mixed in. The vet gave me Panacur for hookworms. The Panacur bottle was marked for Horse and Cattle. She was given .10ml for 3 days. Has anyone see anything like this. Answer: It will probably subside after a bit, some dogs seem to develop this from certain meds, often common with heartworm meds. You might want to keep a diary, recording, what the pup is doing thru the day , any meds , new foods, cleaning product etc as other things can set off, with heartworm and other meds it can be upto 2 weeks after treatment before head bobbing occurs, the diary will help to pinpoint possible things that could cause You can do a search on the forum about head bobbing, I believe in one post about a vet commented on it, someone also made a video of, unlike a seizure a dog will cognizant(responsive) during a head bobbing incident.
