Caution about diarreha!!
Question: On Friday our 1&1/2 yr old shih zu started to get the diarreha, On Saturday it was worse so I called the vet and she said to stop giving her food and lots of water, On Sunday it was no better so I called again, Kaya was getting some water and didn't seem dehydrated or too lathagic. Monday , Kaya still had the diarreha , so I took her in,,After some bloodwork and stool examination she said it was probaly a bad bacterial infection in the lower intestine. Kaya was dehydrated and she spent the afternoon recieving IV too get hydrated again, she is on some medication and slowly getting back on food again. If I had of waited another couple of days she may have been very sick or possibly dead. Often we think that something is not too serious, but you should consult a vet when your not sure about the health of your pet. Dobb Answer: Glad your dog is okay, and your right it can be serious and life threatening I created a post under pet encyclopedia with regards to when to seek a vet Answer: Originally Posted by Dobb On Friday our 1&1/2 yr old shih zu started to get the diarreha, On Saturday it was worse so I called the vet and she said to stop giving her food and lots of water, On Sunday it was no better so I called again, Kaya was getting some water and didn't seem dehydrated or too lathagic. Dobb i am glad your little girl is on her way to feeling better! so glad you got her to the vet when you did!! Answer: Ontario Greys,,That's a good thread for anyone experiencing diarreha in their pet. It can be very serious if left untreated. Had to call the vet this morning,,Kaya is favoring the leg the IV was in, limping around. Vet says it is probaly cause it may still feel funny to her on account of the IV, to give it a day and see how she is. It seems to be bothering her less as the day goes on. Should be all right. We have such a good relationship with our vet and the staff at the clinic,,they are a little more expensive than some of the others around here, but I wouldn't trade the care and understanding that we recieve just to save a few dollars. Vet even gave me her personal cell phone number on Saturday in case Kaya was much worse on Sunday and I needed her. Not alot of vets will do that!! I must go and give her alittle more rice, egg and hamburger to build her strength back up,, Dobb Answer: I'm glad she's doing better. You're so right about diarrhea. It can dehydrate an animal rapidly. It's so important to get fluids into them, even if it means using a syringe to dispense the water right in the animal's mouth. Answer: That's what I did over the weekend, syringed water in her mouth. I should start a new thread, but will mention it here, her leg is still bothering her where she had the IV, she can walk and run fine, but will only do so in spurts, she will go 5 or 6 feet and stop and lay down. It's not swelled and looks alright, must still feel funny to her, Talked to clinic yesterday and they said it was probaly still feeling funny to her. It seems to be somewhat better today so I will see how the day goes. Has any one else had this problem with an IV ?? Dobb Answer: Originally Posted by Dobb Has any one else had this problem with an IV ?? Dobb I havent experienced any animal related IV probs, but whenever I've had an IV, I always bruise, maybe thats what the prob is. Hope she gets better soon Answer: I'm glad to hear she ok and doing better.and got her to the vet in time.i don't like it when my fur kids get the diarreha. Answer: Kaya is back to 90-95 percent of her old self , eating and drinking great, had a couple of good looking poohs,,her leg is not bothering hardly at all. Glad that is over. Seems ironic, we took out pet insurance on her 4 months ago,,got looking at it and decided to cancel it last month and start a account with the money instead. Great timing, lol the 15 dollars we put in this month didn't cover the 310.00 charge to get her fixed back up. Oh well ,,thats the way it goes sometimes!! Dobb Answer: Glad to hear that Kaya is almost 100% Too bad about the pet insurance. I also decided to put money in a separate account instead of getting the insurance, but with a $3500+ vet bill ahead of me, I am really kicking myself in the butt now.
