anaesthetic risks for older dog
Question: my vet advises that my 12 year old wheaten terrier undergo a 'scope' of his nasal area and esophagus/throat to try to determine the cause of his ongoing vomiting/respiratory problems. xrays and blood work have been inconclusive. this test requires a general anaesthetic; i'm nervous about possible health risks, considering my dog's age and health status. should i be concerned? my dog is about 28-29 pounds, fairly thin for a typical male wheaten. thank you. Answer: There is always a risk with anesthetic, for any animal. If all bloodwork has been done and your dog is otherwise healthy, he should be o.k. The type of anesthetic used for older animals, or animals with any health compromises is Isoflurane, which is very safe as it does not permeate all the organs the way Halothane does. I had my 13 yr old dog and 18 yr old cat anesthetized with Isoflurane, and everything went well! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
