Important ????... Please Help -- puppy with parvo
Question: My boyfriend adopted a 3 month old Rottweiler Puppy from our local animal shelter. The adoption process takes 7-10 days and she was exposed to Parvo. He took her to the emergency vet last night where he found out about the Parvo (Monday). He signed her over to the vet there who will get her the medication for Parvo. On Thursday of this week, my 8 week old Maltese/Daschund Mix arrives and I'm worried about his exposure to Parvo through me and my boyfriend. I've washed all of my exposed clothing in STEAMING water (with chlorox for whites). I just want to know what can be done about the carpet and what else I can do to prevent my Maltese/Daschund Mix from being exposed to Parvo. He has had one immunization against it. What steps should I be taking before he arrives and after? Answer: You may want to ask your friend's vet. Just to make sure to do everything right. Good luck Answer: I know any pet beds must be thrown out and everything must be washed in bleach, any blankets, toys that can't be washed in bleach must be thrown out also, wash everything very very good, and call the vet they can tell you more. good luck keep us posted p.s. nylon leashes can be bleached but not rope toys Answer: Was the bf's puppy in your house? If so, I would also steam clean the carpets and upholstery if he was on it. And, wash all your floors with bleach in the water and rinse. Answer: A bacterial/viral disinfectant called 'Virkon' (or another similar brand your vet uses) can be used on carpets, floors, crates, etc. This would be available through your vet in powder or pill form that is to be diluted in lukewarm water. Explain the situation and they should sell it to you with the ratio for dilution. For objects that can not be thrown into the washing mashine, wash thoroughly with hot soapy water and some bleach then rinse. Put the Virkon in a spray bottle and spray thoroughly and allow to sit for 15 minutes before wiping off. You can then rinse. For carpets, just spray and let evaporate. If caught early (usually within the first 24 hours), the success rate for Parvovirus is pretty high as long as the animal is re-hydrated intra-veinously(sp?) + along with other meds. Answer: Was the puppy testing positive for parvo or just treated just in case. This is a question you should be asking your vet. Answer: We took the Rottweiler home from the shelter on Friday (March 2). We also had been to the shelter several other times during the week. Before I left the shelter, they had bleach pans to step in (due to outbreak of parvo there) and I stepped in them. The Rottweiler was diagnosed last night (Monday, March 5) at an emergency 24 hour vet because we noticed she wasn't eating and had been throwing up and had diarrhea. He signed her over to one of the vet assistants at the hospital because he can't handle a sick dog right now and give her the care she would need. I'm really worried about the 8 week old that's coming thursday though. He lives in a Condo so there's not backyard or anything to watch out for. She never pooped in the house or anything and she had never been to my house. My shoes have been soaked in a bleach solution just in case but they were soaked post diagnosis so my carpet may already be infected. Steam cleaning is suggested? :( Answer: I also don't have a vet yet because I don't have a puppy until Thursday. We had just picked up the Rottweiler on Friday and were due to take her for a checkup and spaying (at a vet the shelter instructed us to) on today. We never got to take her to the vet our appointment was for today. Answer: Originally Posted by MyzTery2u she had never been to my house. Since your bf's puppy has not been to your house but your shoes were disinfected after the diagnosis, I would steam clean your carpets and wash your floors with Virkon (as posted by luckypenny) as per directions. Your bf's carpet and floors should also be done so he can't transfer to your house, and, do not take your puppy to your bf's house. Good luck and I hope his puppy will be okay.
