Is this a symtom of cat stress?
Question: Here is the situation, we just moved into a new house. teddy, naturally my scared -y cat is not happy obviously he was peeing on us in the night be cause it is a lot noisier here, so he will not leave our bedroom. he hides under the bed. first 3 days he woudl not eat and just started drinking water. my problem is we have the litter in the bedroom now and food and water...peeing in our bed stopped but now he will not stop scratching in the litter box....he is in and out...seems like he is prepping to use the litter box but then just gets out...not too sure what is going on we feel bad because he is so terrified to leave the bedroom. his brother on the other hand is having a ball running all over the place....could this be stress related? Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to help him with this adjustment...please help, worried mom . nalani Answer: Sounds like he might have a urinary infection. Repeated trips to the litter box is a very common sign. My vet told me when my cat was having that issue that stress is a major contributor for some cats to get this. I would take him to the vet to get checked out. Answer: Yes, take him to the vet. If it's a urinary infection, it's easy to fix and one less stressor. Even if there's nothing physically wrong, I'd keep him in your bedroom for now, all cats are different and if he was a bit fragile to begin with, a change in surroundings can be quite scary. Don't push him in any way, just let him chill. Leave the door almost closed, just a crack for him to come through when he decides to brave the great unknown. Or maybe the other cat will come looking for him? Answer: I would definitely take him to the vet. A new home is a big stressor for as cat and he is showing it and it can certainly affect his urinary tract - it may hurt when he goes to potty and the behavioral issue is also important. Good luck! Answer: I agree as well a trip to the vet is needed..My vet told me that the first sign of a urinary infection is the need to either use the litter box all the time & not pee! or to pee outside the litterbox! Leave him where he is safe and leave the door open a bit! You never know...he may be braver when he is feeling better! Cindy Answer: I'd get him to the vet asap to be on the safe side. If he hasn't been able to pee after scratching in the box he may even have a life threatening blockage. Be sure to get him on a food that prevents crystals if this does end up being the case. Good luck. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
