Re; Dog food -CJ Parsons

Question:
CJ, I just made up my pups meat and I was wrong. It is now costing me $25.00 -$30.00 every 2 weeks (found the receipt in the bag ).Sorry for misinforming you!!
Also I just checked and your a student, so I was thinking, would it work to buy cheap dog food, add 1/4c of meat with the vitamins mixed into it or a beaten egg with the vitamins mixed in (alternate days). That way it should be cheaper but they'll still be getting some nutrition. Left over veggies to from your meal could be added, fruit etc.
I was thinking of doing this myself when Abbey gets really big if it gets too costly.
Luba, Carina anyone else, what do you think of feeding this way?

Answer:
Feeding low end dogfood of any kind is crap. It also has stuff in it thats not good for your dog. Either feed a good dog food or go the total barf diet. The good dog food is less cost in the end. Both health wise and money wise.

Answer:
amaruq, I didn't mean food like Ol'Roy, I meant like Medi-Cal, or is that just as bad? I can't get the brands you guys list which is why I went to RAW. But my vet has Medi-Cal.

Answer:
Sadie is supplemented with MediCal
It's a very good brand 25% of her food is MediCal the rest home made.

You may find it cheaper with veggies is you get them from the sale carts where they package a bunch together for like 99cents or something.

Thats where I get a lot of Sadies from, potato's and things. Cheaper that way and the food is still good.

Answer:
Thanks Luba, thats good to know!! I wanted to give Abbey the best possible start but I'm also worried she's going to be a monster! With an appetite to match!! And on this diet when she weighs 100 pounds thats 3 c. of meat alone plus 1/2c of liver so that might be pushing the budget to the extreme. But we'll see, maybe she won't get that big, or I might just do the 1/2 and 1/2 routine.
And amaruq, actually in my eyes, all boughten dog food is crap, some just a higher quality of crap than others.

Answer:
Medi-cal isn't that bad. I thought you were talking the Wal-mart specials. I just shake my head at that stuff.

I tried a few weeks ago to start the Barf diet. My oldest and Motzi xouldn't handle it and began throwing up all over. Once they got the raw food up they were fine. Scared the daylights out of me. Old garbage guts Lizzy was fine.

I got them all on Pro Plan Turkey and Barley. So far so good with everything and I'm keeping my fingers crossed because we have had so much trouble with feeding the 2.

Answer:
Hi Chaney...sorry I missed that you posted to me...thanks for taking into consideration that I am a student...I know you shouldn't have dogs if you can't afford them but they have endless toys, sweaters, leashes, beds, they are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered so if I can do all that then I can surely try and feed them the best I can.

I was really naive when i first bought the dog food, naturally I went ol'roy but only fed it to my oldest for 2 days because luckily he had a vet appointment for his parvo shot and the vet put a stop to that food quickly (thank god), then I went to various brands like Actrium, Purina and Pedigree until I just went for vet food. I really like your idea of giving them Medi-cal supplemented with vitamins and other things. So I can give them left over vegs (raw or cooked?), fruits? Can I give them any left over beef or chicken, suasage or fish that is left?

I live in Newfoundland and our diets are a lot of salt beef, salt fish, wild game and veggies so I always have left overs...can you give me a little more input on the veggies and fruit and possible cooked meats that I can give them?

Answer:
**** you did answer somewhere else. Here I come Catt!!LMAO!!
Veggies should be at least partially cooked, leftovers from your meals are fine. No grapes or raisins and no onions!
My dogs love fresh pineapple! I couldn't believe it, I bought one for the kids and I and the dogs would not leave my feet when I was cutting it up? Who knew?
Try anything your dogs will let you know!! The only thing I haven't seen reccomended was pork and I don't know why that is?
I know my vet was concerned if Abbey was getting enough salt? Just check with your vet the next time your there. And don't worry we all started out extremely tight with money but I'm sure you'll always find a way to do whats best for your pet.
CJ I'm impressed your so young and so concerned with your animals. Believe me if it comes to my kids or feeding my dogs 3c of meat every day,the dogs will be supplemented!!
Have you tried the dog bone recipes yet??

Answer:
I am due to buy a new bag of food this week so I decided to do the medi-cal food with as much "people" food as I can and see how they like that...I can only imagine they won't put up much of a fight when I lay down some forbidden foods...I tried the peanut butter poppers recipe so far and they were watching me mix it up and actually were drooling...Peanut butter is to them like Chocolate is to most humans HEAVEN!!

Answer:
I know they just absolutely love the stuff!! Did you know peanut butter works for hiccups, in human and in pets? Abbey gets the hiccups once in a while so I always put some on a tsp. she licks it off and Bam their gone.
The garlic and cheese bones they really love too. Do your dogs like the pb poppers?
So I bet you eat lobster a lot huh? I envy you.. Can I ask how much does it cost there? What about shrimp, is it cheap too? I know its a little off topic..

Answer:
Wow I didn't know that PB stops hiccups...my little one gets hiccups all the time.
Yeah we eat Lobster pretty regularly, the price varies depending on when the season is...right now an already cooked lobster is $11 a pound and a live one is $10 but that is really high so no one but tourists would buy them...I get them when they are $7 if I have to get one in the store or I call a friend who owns a lobster farm and have them sent on over for free. Frozem shrimp are $4 for around 30 and fresh shrimp in the shell are about $10 for a bag of 20-30 (tiger shrimp so they are quite large), scallops are about $4 a pound and mussles are usually around 99 cents a pound, Salmon is super cheap, you can get a whole salmon for $3 and cod and trout are good prices too. you like seafood?

Answer:
Yes peanut butter is amazing! I think Abbey is almost like a human child that way. Because I know babies get hiccups all the time when they're little, something to do with the development of their esophagus. So I wonder if its the same in dogs? I just wish I knew that when my babies were little. Maybe a little p.b. on the end of their soother?hahaaha
And yes we love seafood, but we don't get to eat it as often as we'd like. It's too expensive here. I guess seafood to you guys would be like steak here, fairly reasonable.
But you can defiintely give your dog fish. I don't know about lobster though. What a pampered pooch that would be!!
