A familiar problem... could he be overheating?
Question: Long story to ask a simple question... can a dog get diarrhea for overheating? I have posted quite a few times on here concerning my Brittany/Border Collie x and his diarrhea and underweight problems. Well since switching to Innova Evo, he's been ok for the most part. Still some soft poop every now and then but usually its good. He's only been on it for about two weeks so he's still adjusting. Well about fifteen minutes ago he started panting and shaking. Not bad, but enough to notice. He then kept getting up, walking around with his back arched and looking sick, then lying back down. Then just a few minutes ago he walked into the kitchen and exploded with diarrhea. Well a little of it was soft, with some form to it, but most of it was dark brown liquid. Now, he's had these "fits" before. And they prompted vet visits where the vet did tests and same story every time is that he's ok and they cant explain it. It may be unrelated but it was really cold outside so I turned up my heat. Which I havent done in a while, and he hasnt had an episode like this in a while. I just cleaned my apartment so there are no food trash stuffs anywhere, and his diet has been strictly Evo lately, so I know it wasnt something he ate. I was trying to brainstorm as to what could cause this if not food or a parasite (which vets keep testing to be negetive). Now after all that, I was wondering if he could be overheating? I have to turn up the thermostat just about 80*F to get my apartment to warm up, and I know thats a bit warm for dogs probably, but I didnt know if thats enough to overheat him to the point of getting sick. And I dont know the symptoms of an overheated dog besides the obvious panting, but I dont know whats going here. Like I said, my vets heard my recount of past episodes like this and did test, always turns out Louie is ok and they dont know whats going on. It only just occurred to me that maybe the heat is the variable I hadnt considered. I put him in a cool bath for a bit and turned off the heat, and he's curled up sleeping now, seems to be feeling better having emptied his system and gotten a little lick of yogurt. Could it be he was just too hot? Answer: What did he do before you fed him/before he got sick? Was he active? Has he ever gotten his thyroid checked? Hyperthyroid symptoms include diarrhea and intolerance to heat. Answer: I can't answer your Q.. but when Cider isn't feeling well she pants and shakes.. She spazzes for hours before I knew what it meant. When she gets outside generally it's a case of explosive poop. Least in out house panting shaking means dear lord I'm feeling horrible and I may explode please please let me out. Answer: He was normal all day, and I fed about six pm (a little over an hour before this happened) and all day and since the feeding he'd been pretty mellow as he usually is on our stay-at-home lazy days. He was sleeping next to me before it started. And as it got warmer in here, he started panting and so on. Ah!! The thyroid was something we havent checked yet, so I'm going to call the vet when they open tomorrow and get an appointment for after work. Also, is there a way I can get him to drink more water?? He doesnt drink much as it is and every time he gets diarrhea I'm so worried he'll get dehydrated! Which cant help if he's getting overheated... Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
