hole in the head disease (Oscars)
Question: My oscars have a disease called "Hole in the Head Disease". I have tried a few things to sure it but I cant seem to get rid of it. They just got it about a week ago so I know its not too late to cure it. What can I do? Answer: What size is your tank? How often do you do partial water changes and what size filter do you have? Answer: Did you also check your PH levels? Could you also have an algae problem? (I doubt algae is problem though but test PH) Also check Tempature of tank. Curious now but how big is the Oscar. I had Huge Fancy Goldfish for years. I had more tanks then I knew what to do with lol! But to be honest i will never have fish again as I obsessed all the time about water and temps and this and that. Answer: Amaruq,I agree with you, never again a fishtank!!!! Answer: The disease affects mainly cichlids Grrrrreat. Thats the type of fish I have. But I like being obsessed with my fish. Answer: Well I have 3 Oscars in a 35 gallon tank for now, I was planning on buying a 55 gallon this weekend comming up. I also have 4 dragon fish in the tank and one alge eater. The PH level was kind of high, but I put some PH downer in the tank and I have been changing out 30% of the water every 3 days. I am going to try this medicine called Hex- Mix (something like that) and see if it works, I hope it does. Two of my oscars are about 4 inches and one is still a baby which they get along. I know I need a bigger tank and will have on this weekend. I do have two filter on the tank, which is more than penty. Thanks for everyones, help. I'll let you know if this medicine works! Answer: Well, you know your tank is WAY overcrowded. YOu also know Oscars can grow to over a foot long, right? A 55 gal tank will be nowhere near big enough for them. They are also messy feeders and make lots of waste, so you will need to get powerful filters and do many partial water changes if you want to keep them in such a small tank. Answer: Yup I completely agree with LR. Also changing the water ever 3 days stresses out the fish. Do you let the water sit? Do you treat fresh water to get rid of chlorine? High PH levels is from the over crowding and waste. Check what kind of food you are feeding too. On the poision dart frog.. ARE YOU NUTS lol! Answer: Well I do treat the water and stuff, and I know I need a bigger tank, I will get one eventually. After that thou, no more fish tanks, I am going to stick with my Oscars and my angel fish (which are in another fish tank that I've had for a long time) Answer: I had an Oscar that hole in the head disease as well. Ugly disease but I got rid of it. If you have stone on the bottom of the tank that is where the parasite lives. If you are feeding your Oscar live fish make sure you do not dump the water into your tank with the fish. Also maybe go to pellet feedings until the disease is cleared up. I vaccummed, vaccummed, vaccummed the tank bottom when I changed the water. I changed about 1/3 of the tank water once a week after letting it sit for 2 days. This disease usually kills the fish if not treated immediately so don't be afraid to be agressive in cleaning the stones. The parasite comes in on other fish and can't be seen by the naked eye. This is what worked for me. Give it a shot! You have nothing to loose Good Luck Norma Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
