diabeties home testing. Im so happy!
Question: well, what a week we have all had... this food recall has everyone out of their minds with fear. But I am glad to say that someting good happened to me today. I decided over the weekend that I was going to start Lexie on home blood testing for her diabeties, but it seems to be a little costly, mainly for the strips. So I contacted the Diabeties organisiation here in New Zealand, and the really nice lady said that she would send me a Glucometer "for free" since it was for my baby. She also advised me to get a letter from my vet and see if my doctor would prescribe the strips for the glucometer. If it is prescribed by a doctor it is subsidised by our government... so instead of paying NZ$55 for 50 strips, I only have to pay NZ$3!!! - well my doctor said he would write me a prescription! I am so happy. (hopefully no-one in NZ finds out about this). So any advise on home diabeties testing would be greatly appreciated. Answer: Awesome! A way to beat the system! I like it (I am soon to work in health care). But sorry I have no idea about home testing in animals. Answer: lol.... yeap, I guess I shouldnt have broadcasted it, but Im really happy about the whole thing, and just wanted to share my happiness, and get some tips from ppl home testing. Answer: No no. Its good you can share it. That way maybe more people can do it. Its one way to keep those vet costs down and keep your babies healthier! Answer: you are so right! I dont feel so bad now! I just hope there are more accomodating doctors in the world! I also forgot to mention that the Glucometer is one that does both blood and urine, so im really happy. Thank God there are still some nice ppl in the world who are willing to help our pets! Answer: Hello and congratulations on taking the plunge and deciding to hometest. I have a diet controlled cat and hometesting helped us get out of a cycle of rebound and hypo and get her off insulin altogether... I hope it is okay to post links here but I am going to link to some places where you can do more research and see a hometesting video.... I encourage you to check the Feline Diabetes message Board and check in at health.... http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/list.php?8 here is a youtube videos made by one of our FDMB members and it is awesome on hometesting.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zE12-4fVn8 There is a ton you are already doing to be proactive...please feel free to ask me any questions .I certainly don't know all the answers but there is some great info out there I can help you find. cheers, Kimmee Answer: Thanks Kimmee. I have seen one of the sites. But will look at the other right now. It is my hope that I can get Lexie off the insulin and have her on a controlled diet, as you have done. Thanks again Answer: Thats a pretty good video to watch Kimmee. I nearly fell off my chair when I seen the cat on it.... it looks exactly like Lexie. Thanks again Answer: Holy cow...that does look like Buddy....mus be a good sign that you are on the right track.....If you want to talk further feel free to pm...we have really been through it with this disease and if I can help your cat at all, I'd be thrilled!
