Teething?
Question: Helix is now almost 5 months old and I haven't noticed any real signs that he's teething. He hasn't lost any teeth that I've found or noticed and his chewing habits haven't really changed (he may be chewing a little more, but that may just be my imagination). So I ask, at what age do dogs usually lose their puppy teeth and how many do they lose? I know if he hasn't lost them by the time he gets neutered between 6-7 months, then they can remove them during the surgery, but I'd like to know in advance if we're going to have to have this done! Thanks everyone! Answer: most times you wont notice the teeth gone. You'll just look in their mouth and see all these big white fangs Some dogs will chew more then others. Just like kids, they loose all their puppy teeth. The back molars don't usually come in until 9/10/11 months depending. Answer: I have 2 dogs, one starting heavily teething at 3 months, and stopped about 5 months. The other started teething around 4 months and stopped around 6 months. I think the general number is between 2-6 months is when you might see heavy teething. For me I only found a tooth once, that's between both dogs, but I did hear them crunching on what I'm guessing where teeth several times I think most dogs swallow the teeth they lose rather than the teeth just falling out of their mouth, because being puppies they pick up and eat everything anyway, lol. If you hear your dog chewing something and you're positive there's nothing they could have picked up off the floor it might be a tooth. Depending on the dog you may not notice a big change in behavior. They may just chew a bit more, and sometimes they might become a little mouthy. One thing I noticed in both of my dogs teething stage is a bit of blood when chewing on hard toys, but neither of them ever exhibited signs of pain or severe discomfort. Since your dog is not quite 5 months old yet he may not have even started the teething stage yet. Some dogs don't enter the teething stage 'til they're about 5 months. Just to be cautious I would get him checked by a vet to make sure all his teeth are growing properly, but most likely he hasn't started, or you haven't noticed. Answer: Typically our dogs have teethed between 4 and 6 months. Usually, it's a slow drop over 3 weeks to a month...but Cole dropped all his at once. The incisors fell out over a 2-day period one week. Then the rest of his teeth fell out over a 3 to 4-day period shortly thereafter. He was one miserable pup for a while. He was our youngest teether--about 4 months old at the time, as I recall but hazel's memory is pretty bad, so don't quote her on that! I've got a lot of our dogs' teeth--it seems that the faster they fall out, the easier they are to find on the floor--evidently pup either gets tired of the novelty of eating the teeth, or gets full At any rate, the pups that lost teeth gradually over a number of weeks are very poorly represented in my tooth collection--I think they ate more of them. The "slow teethers" are also the pups that showed the least amount of excess mouthiness and gum discomfort... You're maybe just not noticing because Helix is a "slow teether". Or, Helix may just be saving them up to drop them all at once Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
