my dog's sick
Question: My yellow lab is sick today. He has been vomitting and has diarrhea. Normally, I would take him to the vet, but we just moved to a new city 3 days ago. I tried to call our old vet, but they weren't any help. We don't have a new vet yet and they are all closed anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions as what could be the problem? He attmepts to drink, but immediately vomits the water. Answer: The only suggestion I have is to find a new vet fast. If your dog is vomitting and not getting any fluids dehydration is a possibility. Did he get into anything? PLease take him to see a vet and post back with an update. Good Luck Answer: What about a 24 hr ER vet? I'd look for one of those and get there asap. Answer: pick up the phone book and look, any vet is better than no vet Answer: Since when today has your dog been sick? How old is he? Do try to find a vet that is open. If that is totally impossible in your area, this is what we do when one of our dogs is vomitting. We withold all food for at least 12 hours and water for 6 hours. After 6 hours, we re-introduce water but only 1/8 of a cup. If they can hold it down for another 1/2 hour, we give them another 1/8 of a cup...and so on. If they are still fine after 12 hours, then we give 1 tablespoon of overcooked rice and cooked chicken breast every hour if they are able to keep it down. Within 24 hours, if all continues well, we slowly re-introduce their regular kibble. If your dog is a puppy, however, I would encourage him to continue drinking water but only very small amounts at a time to discourage vomitting and to avoid de-hydration. Make an appointment with a vet as soon as possible if he's very young. Good luck and keep us posted. Answer: Are you in Louisville like it says next to your name? There has to be an emergency vet there if nothing else. I'm assuming you meant Kentucky, or am I mistaken? Answer: I guarantee you living in Louisville there is a 24 emergency vet, please give update when after you go. Answer: Please get your dog to an emergency vet immediately. It sound like it could be pancreatitis. Good luck and please post with an update. Answer: Is your dog vaccinated? Answer: He hasn't had any vomitting or diarrhea in the past couple of hours. He's over 4 years old. He's started holding down the water and has had a few pieces of dog food. I'm going to see how he's doing in the morning. Answer: Yes, he's vaccinated and no, he hasn't gotten into anything. No one thinks stress from the move could cause any of this? Answer: It's possible that it's just stress...is it just today that he has been ill ? Personally, I wouldn't feed him anything, just water if he wants it. Give his tummy a break for a day. If it continues into today, then it's obviously not a one-off thing and it's time to crack open the Yellow Pages to find a Vet ~ any Vet. Answer: Any updates? I hope your dog has recovered! If it is pancreatitis, that is really bad... definitely don't feed the dog in that case. One tip, if a dog is having trouble holding down water, let them have pieces of ice instead, and only give a little at a time. Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
