He ate my cough drops!
Question: ARGH! I accidentally left my closet door open and came back about 30 minutes later to find Petey had eaten my open bag of cough drops!!!! There was about 1/3 left in the bag and there is nothing left but a few scraps of bag...even all the wrappers are missing! They're the Ricola brand and fortunately there isn't any acetaminophen or dextromethorphan in them. The main ingredient is menthol, 2.0 mg. I called the Emergency vet all in a panic, but they told me to just watch him, that he will most likely vomit. GREAT. Just what I want to deal with at 1am!! I'm so mad at myself for leaving that door open! I'm just so RELIEVED that it's not worse than this though. Scary! Has this happened to anyone else before?? Answer: Don't kick yourself, Smiley14--accidents happen and I suspect most of us have accidentally left a closet door open. At our house, it usually means that someone's boot tongue is gonna get chewed off--Cass likes to do that when she thinks she's being slighted for attention. She swallows the pieces, then barfs them up on our beds later when we least expect it. Did the vet say anything about making him throw up? At least that way it's on your timeline, not Petey's and maybe you'll get some sleep? Answer: Aww, hope Petey has a tough tummy and will be fine . Lucy once got a bottle of advil but luckily just licked all the coating off the pills and then spit them out. Answer: Originally Posted by TeriM Lucy once got a bottle of advil but luckily just licked all the coating off the pills and then spit them out. Whoa! Now that could have been really bad! Answer: Thanks Hazel! He didn't say anything about making him vomit. Oh, but he did tell me to give him some bread to try to soak up his stomach....something like that. So I'm sitting here watching him, and he's giving me the guilty face. He KNOWS he misbehaved! He said most of the time dogs vomit them back up, although Petey might not have had enough to upset his stomach too much since it was maybe 15 drops and wrappers. The vet told me the last case he had with dogs and cough drops was a small 15 pound dog who ate 2 whole bags!!! So I guess my 63lb dog eating a 1/3 bag isn't quite as bad as it could have been. WHEW! I'm going to watch him for about an hour or so and then go back to bed....I think. Answer: Originally Posted by TeriM Aww, hope Petey has a tough tummy and will be fine . He sure is a cutie. he he he Maybe if you just go back to bed right away, Petey will oblige you by barfing up the drops on your bed when you least expect it...like just as you're dropping off to sleep. At least then you won't have to worry about it for the rest of the night! Answer: Originally Posted by hazelrunpack Whoa! Now that could have been really bad! Yep, we were really, really lucky . It definately taught us a good lesson though . Answer: Yeah, that's his "What? I'm cute and innocent and you have to love me no matter what I do" face. I'm too wired to sleep now. Silly I know, but I'm a worrier. I was unpacking...just got in from a long drive from being out of town. So now I'm going through email while waiting. So far, nothing! Answer: Of course , he'll no doubt wait until you are snuggly in bed . Actually I doubt that was enough to upset his tummy unless he is one of those sensitive tummy types. He sure does look cute in that pic . Answer: Poor Petey, look at his face At least he won't get the flu any time soon Good luck Petey, and stop taking medecine without asking ! Answer: LOL, Frenchy! Too true. Well, it's after 3am, and he's now snoring away. Guess that means he feels just fine. So I'm off to bed now to hope for no messes come morning. Thanks guys! Answer: How is Petey today? Answer: I was wondering the same thing. Did he ever return the cough drops to you? Silly dogs...never a dull moment! Answer: Oh sorry guys! I'm on jury duty this week and am stuck sitting in a juror waiting room at the moment. Was here all day yesterday and so far all day today. They don't allow cell phones, but I found out yesterday, we are allowed to bring our laptops. So I'm finally getting a turn at the connection, so am trying to get caught up on everything now. Anyway, Petey is doing just fine! He did look a bit miserable there for a while and started gagging at about 4am, but he never threw up. So we lucked out I guess. Is it just me or can you just see the misery in this pic? LOL! (Sorry, I can laugh now since he's back to normal again). Thanks so much for asking!!! Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
