Question:
I'm a newbie and I really appreciate being able to post my concern here in the hopes that maybe someone can answer this for me. Our dog is 14 months old - male Pom/****zu - unaltered (until next month) - vaccines to date - otherwise healthy.
He has this strange thing where it almost sounds like he's growling while he licks energetically at his penis. He is not neutered yet (next month) so does it maybe have something to do with it?
We got him when he was 9 months old from a family who couldn't keep him - he had only had his 1st puppy shot and nothing else. He has since had all his shots and vet visits in order to take him to the groomers. When we first got him it was almost as if he had a licking disorder which was since almost disappeared except for this "thing" he does. He does this at least a couple times a day.
We love this energetic little guy who has brought so much joy into our lives but would like to understand why this quirk is happening. Hopefully someone else maybe has experienced this with their pet.

I have no idea why he does it but I would call the vet. If he/she doesn't have any concerns then I would get him neutered right away.

He has been doing this since we first got him. He is scheduled to get neutered the first week of May - it's the earliest date.
I understand he needs to be neutered but I'm not sure if it will result in his altering his behaviour.
He has been to the vet several times and she hasn't picked up on anything being wrong.
I would say it's more of a gnawing sound - a little growlly - he only does it for maybe 30 seconds but several times a day.
