Parent's cat may have cancer?

Question:
My parent's just called, they are very upset as they just found out their 13 year old cat Frankie has cancer. They told me the vet didn't do any tests and just felt around. He has a large lump in his abdomen, is anemic (his gums were pale) and lethargic. He isnt' eating very much and has lost about a pound recently. Obviously, something is wrong, but how does the vet know that it really is cancer? Could he have a blockage of some sort instead? The vet said it was too big for a hairball though. I don't know much about this really so thought I'd ask on the board, like if there are some recommended tests that could/should be done. They love Frankie so much, I hope there is something that can be done. Any suggestions anyone?

Answer:
I am so sorry to hear about Frankie.

The vet is giving his/her opinion as per the symptoms. Anemia means internal bleeding and with a lump, lehtargy and the age of Frankie it points to cancer. The only way of being absolutely sure is with blood tests.

Answer:
Thanks for the reply, rainbow. What are they looking for in the blood tests exactly? Right now my parents have decided to give him supportive care and make him feel better for as long as they can and will not be doing chemo. He has been a great cat and they don't want him to suffer, which I can understand. It's just heartbreaking...

Answer:
They would look at blood cells and elevated enzymes. I'm not an expert on things like this so it's really hard to explain. I would, however, put Frankie on a high protein diet like EVO or Orijen.

Again, lots of hugs and good luck for Frankie, you and your parents.

Answer:
How sad. I have not yet had the experience, but expect to, and I am NOT ready.
I realize your parents are terribly attached to their boy, but I hope they don't let him go on too long. Whatever his normal behaviour, even if he is just quieter than usual (lethargy), you can be sure he's feeling lousy.

Answer:
It is sad, I feel like he's my little furry brother, poor guy. I don't think they will let him go on too long, although it is hard to let go. They said the vet had some things for him to make him feel better for now although honestly i was too shocked and can't remember what my Dad said. I think steroids maybe? They were not ready to make a decision yet like put him down, so they will have a little time to get used to the idea. I don't know if they can switch his food, he's got a very sensitive stomach and tends to throw up anything other than what he is used to.

Thanks so much for the good thoughts and advice.

Answer:
So sorry about Frankie I hope Frankie rallies a little and gives you all a little more time

Answer:
thank you., I feel like this is my own cat going through this. They love this cat so much, my mom was sobbing on the phone. He is only 13, it is too bad. I should have told them to bring him to the vet sooner, they said he was tired, but my own cat is the same age and she is tired too, so I didnt think much of it. You dont' know until it is too late...

Answer:
I am not the greatest with words but I can send times 100 to Frankie, your parents and you.
