Cat miscarriage?
Question: Hello, I'm fostering a pregnant cat who has now been pregnant for about 70 days and no labour. Before I go on, I'll just say I'm bringing her to the vet this afternoon. I just want to know if anyone can tell me what to expect: She had some mucusy (slightly pink) discharge 2 days ago, but still no labour and not really anything that looks like nesting or contractions. She stopped eating the day before yesterday (something I keep reading is normal just before labour), but still nothing. She eats the cat treats I give her, but none of the kitten food or the regular cat food. Could she have had a miscarriage and the kittens are all dead? Like I said, we're going to the vet this afternoon, but I guess I want to prepare myself for the worst; a possible c-section of dead kittens? Thank you in advance for any input. Answer: Awww, poor momma cat. I've never been in a position like this so really can't tell you anything. I know I'd be thinking the worst scenario too. I'm sure the vet will do a c-section but I guess there is a chance the babies won't be stillborn. Good luck. Answer: for you and momma cat Answer: Anywhere between 60-70 days is technically normal.. but average is about 63-65. Prepare that it may not go well, but don't be dead set that it's terrible yet. Answer: What happened at the vet and how is momma cat? Answer: Well! The vet felt her belly and said she *maybe* felt ONE kitten! She said it looked like a false pregnancy! So she took two x-rays and said it might be a kitten, but seemed very unlikely as she didn't really see it's bones. It seemed like there might be air in her abdomen. She recommended I take her to the animal hospital tonight for surgery tomorrow, which is what I have done. How weird! She showed all the signs of being pregnant: big belly, enlarged nipples which the vet squeezed and out came milk, bigger appetite, extremely affectionate in the last week, slight nesting behaviour. She is a foster cat. I had taken her to the SPCA to confirm that she was pregnant and they just looked at her, like literally looked, didn't touch her, and said, yep, she's pregnant, here's some kitten food. I wish they had felt her belly at that time and we would have known there were no kittens. So, she's in the hospital tonight, poor baby. I'm paying for all of this myself as the SPCA doesn't pay to have this kind of medical treatment for its cats. I had never intended to adopt her (just foster until she was over her cold which is why I had originally fostered her), but now I couldn't bear to return her to the SPCA to be put down! Answer: Thanks so much for caring about this poor little girl. Hope everything goes well for her . Answer: Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.tendlife.com
