Staggers like a drunk when exhausted

Question:
yesterday I was out in the trusty field with the dogs, playing fetch and letting them run their little hearts out.
Bailey tries his hardest to keep up with Meiko ( and does suprisingly well) however I think he over exherts himself, because when we stopped, he kept walking around Mieko in circles then started staggering as though he was drunk! Soon there after he fell down and just layed there panting. Still concious.
Obviously I ran over to him and sat on the ground beside him, his temperature felt a bit high and his panting was intense. After about a minute or so he got up and started walking around some more like a little drunk.
SO
We head off to the house slowly ( he wouldnt let me pick him up) by the time we got to the house he was walking better,
Im thinking he had exhausted himself by trying to keep up with Meik and also tired his little muscles out too.
Is this story setting off alarms for anyone? Cause I would hate to be overlooking something.

Answer:
How is his blood pressure Erykah ?

Answer:
Honestly Im not sure.
Should I take him back in to the vet and see?
I would really hate to over look something and pass it off as him being out of shape or something

you could try looking here.hope its not serious.

Answer:
Poor guy! Has he had an overall checkup? Any blood tests?

It could just be overexertion, and in that case, you'd just have to get to know the signs of when he's starting to get tired and make him take a break...

Answer:
How is Bailey tonight?

Answer:
He just had his full check up last month, blood work came back normal and he was declared a "healthy little guy"
I am just going to have to stop him and Meik sooner for now. He is so determined to catch Meiko ( which is next to impossible)

Frenchy, he's doing fine today! Once he calms down he's back to normal.
Regardless Im going to keep a close eye on him for a bit.
Thanks for the info everyone. I just wanted to see if it set off any alarm bells for anyone else?

Answer:
Ummm, Frenchy didn't ask but I'm glad he is fine now. I guess all you can do is not let him try and catch Meik whom I imagine is faster than a speeding bullet.

Answer:
Im sorry rainbow
Looks like its starting againg
I dont have a clue why I am constantly mixing you two up

Answer:
HA HA HA....our names are totally different, our avatars aren't even close and we live in different provinces. I don't know how you do it.

LOL...but that's okay.....no need to apologize for CRAFT disease although you're starting awfully young.

CRAFT seems to be a genetic default running in my lineage... Thats what happens when "breedings" occur with no genetic testing I guess!

Answer:
What about diabetes?
Does this sound anything like a blood sugar issue?
Yup, think im heading back to the vet.... the net is great for researching things, but really gets the "worry ball" rolling.

Answer:
How's his drinking and peeing?

Answer:
His food and water intake has been the same since he first got here, so no change I would say.

Answer:
They're usually the major tellers for diabetes...

Answer:
Well little update,

He did it again just now. this time we were only playing for 5 minutes and he started. Guess its vet time again.

Answer:
Hope it's nothing

Answer:
I want to get his thyroid checked, it could be hypothyroidism...
if anyone else can think of anything else to get checked out please add it.
I just dont want something small overlooked.

ETA
http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/dog-hypo.htm
1-Lethargic behavior such as a lack of interest in play, frequent napping, tiring out on long walks
2-Weight gain, sometimes without an apparent gain in appetite
3-Bacterial infections of the skin
4-Dry skin
5-Hair loss, especially on the trunk or tail (“rat’s tail”)
6-Discoloration or thickening of the skin where hair loss has occurred
7-Cold intolerance/seeking out warm places to lie down
8-Slow heart rate
9-Chronic ear infections
10-Severe behavioral changes such as unprovoked aggression, head tilt, seizures, anxiety and/or compulsivity
11-Depression
From that list, Bailey has, 1,2,4,7,9, and 10, however 10 is iffy, I dont know what his behaviour was like prior to living here, but he is getting to be a cranky little fella... which has to stop.
Anyways, I'll make an appointment this week, and let you all know how that goes.

Answer:
I know there's something I read about in Labradors that causes them to actually faint sometimes when they are exerting themselves. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called, and I don't remember if it affects different dog breeds. Sorry, that wasn't too helpful!

I hope you figure it out and it's nothing serious.

Answer:
My Border Collie has it, he was diagnosed with Excercise Induced Collapse, but there are many different names for it. Bailey doesnt do it the same as Meiko, but again could be a breed difference. That wasnt one of the red flags that went off when I saw B doing this the first time.

Appointment has been set, our new holistic vet is going to see Bailey on Thursday ( not the actual holistic vet but a traditional vet at the same clinic)
After a good long talk on the phone with them just a while ago, I am confident on moving everyone over there, so they are calling the previous vet for all our records. Gonna be Jamming the fax lines with that
So, Thursday at 7pm Bailey is getting his thyroid test done, I'll let you all know when I get the results. Even the vet figured it was the best place to start, getting that test done.

Answer:
Good luck, Erykah and, hugs for Bailey. I hope it is his thyroid so at least you'll find out right away. It's easily controlled too once you find out his maintanence dose.

Answer:
I didn't see this thread before. Poor Bailey, maybe he just gets dizzy because he gets too excited ? Good luck at the vet

Answer:
Good luck, erykah. Bailey's in good hands with you.

Answer:
Not to alarm you,,our previous shih zu[Beauty] would experience similar staggering and falling down when she got over heated. You have to understand that she was not very healthy, as your dog seems to be in much better condition. Beauty had heart disease and extremely high blood pressure and was ten yrs old when we got her. The first time it happenned we were in the city at the waterfront on a long weekend,,had to carry her around as there was so many people,,we didn't stay long as you could tell she was very hot. We got back to the van and just as I opened the door she fell over and started into a seizure which lasted 30 -40 seconds. I thought she was a goner, the wife was crying,,,when she stopped shaking I put her in the van and headed home to our vets. Wife was calling the vet to meet us at the clinic as it was closed due to the long weekend. When we got there Beauty was pretty much fine other than she was a little lathargic. After that incident we would watch to make sure she didn't get to hot. We had her for three yrs and she had probaly 12-15 seizures in that time period. According to the vet they were due to her heart and blood pressure,,when she got hot her body wasn't getting enough oxygen and would go into a seizure. Anyway, I'm sure your vet will find out the problem and it won't be serious,,Take care, Dobb

Answer:
Thanks for that Dobb.
It one more thing to ask the vet about. Could be a possiblitly
For now though its definately low exersise for Bailey until we figure this out.

Answer:
Has he been checked for a heart murmer? I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I was told when my cat was a kitten that she had a slight heart murmer. As she grew up, the vet said she grew out of it, but if something really scared or startled her, she would stagger quite badly for a few minutes afterwards. I always just associated it to her heart.

After a blood test, I'd ask about the heart, and back, as well as something neurological. It could even be allergies to something... good luck, Erykah.

Answer:
that it's just to much excitement or over heating and nothing to serious. for Bailey
