Tear Stains

Question:
I don't know if I am posting this in the right area, my apologies if I'm not and feel free to move it. I was just wondering if anyone knows a good method for removing tear stains. I clean under Harley's eyes every night to remove any "goop" (for lack of a better word) but his fur is still stained red. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
I know there are more methods out there, but the only one I know of is rather inconvenient - giving the dog only bottled water, instead of tap. I dont know why it works, but it usually clears up and stops tears stains fairly well.

Like I said, I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but thats all I got.

Answer:
There are special products out there that work to clear the stains under the eyes. Here are some I found while googling (the first one is a cleaner, the second one is something you sprinkle on their food.

I have also heard that getting the dog on a really good diet can help with the discharge from the eyes.

Answer:
My dog has allergies to dust, mold and some of the 'green stuff' outdoors. I found that combining allergy relief with a diet of great food did wonders. He still has a moderate amount of staining, but I only treat the allergies in spring and summer when they are at their worst.

Answer:
What are you feeding Harley?

Answer:
We're feeding Harley Pedigree

Answer:
Maybe a change in diet might work? My girl used to have terrible tear stains, and a change in her food worked wonders. When I adopted her she was on Science Diet, which is very grainy and full of fillers, so I put her on a premium food with no corn, by-products, etc. and the tear stains almost fully disappeared! I couldn't believe the difference just a change in diet could make, here's a comparison:

Good luck!

Answer:
The bottled water worked for my American Eskimo - hasn't had a tear stain since he was 9 months - they started that week and ended after a week or so on bottled water. He eats a good fish based holistic kibble as well. I see this question raised on many pet boards and many people recommend the bottled water, which is why I tried it.

Answer:
I can imagine the reason using bottled water rather than tap water works, is because of the chemicals and "stuff" in the tap water, supposedly safe to consume. Since most of us don't drink it ourselves, why give it to the animals?

If it's just a question of removing exsiting stains while you wait for the new water and/ or diet to help however, you could try "oxygenated water" (eau oxygene) as it removes stains rather well without being toxic at all.
